History

Grant was a person barely scraping by when he was given the chance to take part in Doctor Doom's program to create super-soldiers. Grant became one of 99 recruits to make the cut and was injected with one of 99 vials of Super-Soldier Serum. Grant and one other recruit were the only ones to survive and became Doom's Lieutenants of Latveria whose jobs were to crack down on those who opposed Doom's rule. Grant eventually realized what he was doing was wrong and attacked his fellow Lieutenant of Latveria so he wouldn’t hurt any more innocent people. After his fellow Lieutenant died, Grant went into hiding and adopted the alias of Captain America. He then started fighting Doom's armies in the west of Amerika.[1] One day, he tracked one of Doom's armies to the town of Isleton and aided a group of young heroes fighting the army. He then told them he could help them find Doom.[2]

Ant-Man didn't trust Grant, and his brutal way of dealing with opponents made his allies nervous. After fighting off a group of vampires, the team added Viv Vision who gifted Grant with the original shield of Captain America.[3] Grant and the heroes then fell into a trap set by a group of aging villains. After defeating the villains, Ant-Man confessed that he lured them into the trap because Doom was holding people he knew hostage. While Grant was angry with Ant-Man, Dani Cage was more forgiving and allowed Ant-Man to remain with the group.[4]

Grant and the heroes battled Doom New Latveria and a group of Doombots. Doom was defeated and revealed that he turned Grant into a super-soldier so the dying Doom could die in battle, but the plan didn't work out when Grant chose to run instead. Ant-Man wanted to kill Doom for what he had done, and Grant agreed, but Ant-Man was ultimately convinced by Dani to spare Doom's life. Grant and Ant-Man then left the Avengers believing that mercy wasn't always enough to stop villains like Doom.[5]
