Synopsis for "The Man Who Bought America (Part 5)"
Bucky and Sam Wilson keep tabs on the renegade 1950s Steve Rogers, who has gone rogue from the Red Skull in their continued attempt to have the 1950s Cap led them back to the Skull's still hidden base. Barnes feels wrong in using the 1950s Rogers in this way but Wilson reminds Barnes that the 1950s Rogers is the only lead that they have in locating the Red Skull at this point. Wilson also reminds Barnes that the 1950s Rogers is not the original Rogers and has a far more aggressive and less noble world view than the man the 1950s Rogers succeeded.
Barnes and Wilson witness a squad of A.I.M. agents ambush the 1950s Rogers at a diner and take him into custody, but there is nothing they can do about the abduction. Instead, they begin tracking the A.I.M. agents back to their secret lair.
Meanwhile, the Red Skull and Arnim Zola continue to experiment on one of Doctor Doom's stolen device. The Red Skull is anxious to be free of the shared body of Aleksander Lukin and adopt his own identity once again. In another part of the facility, Doctor Faustus secretly betrays his former colleagues and provides the captured S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter with her old GPS transmitter. He causes Carter to forget about ever being pregnant and miscarrying as part of his own concern and sympathy as Carter's doctor.
The next day, Captain America (Bucky Barnes) and the Falcon are continuing to trail A.I.M. through Syracuse, New York when they encounter the Black Widow and a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Black Widow tells them that a disgruntle minion from the Red Skull's camp (Faustus) gave them the location of the Skull's facility in Albany. And that she wants "Captain America to stop another part of the Red Skull's plan".
At the base, Faustus has completely cut off his long beard as part of a disguise and has one final meeting with Third Party presidential hopeful Senator Gordon Wright. They go over their plans for a staged assassination attempt at a presidential debate, scheduled for that evening - an assassination attempt in which Wright is intended to emerge the hero. The shooter will be the Red Skull's daughter, Sin.
That evening, a S.H.I.E.L.D strike team led by the Black Widow and the Falcon raids the A.I.M. facility. Arnim Zola is in Sharon Carter's room where her GPS transmitter fails onto the floor in plan site by Zola. Upon hearing an explosion, he questions an A.I.M. guard who tells him that Faustus is missing from the hidden compound.
At the debate, Senator Gordon Wright takes the stage and begins pontificating. Sin is perched in the stands armed with a sniper rifle. Though instructed to only wound the senator, she decides instead to go for the kill shot. She fires her rifle, but the bullet is deflected as the red and white striped shield of Captain America whizzes across the podium. People begin scrambling in a panic and Captain America leaps into action.
- On the last page, Barnes specifically accepts that he is now Captain America and calls himself that title as others look on to him. Up to this point, Barnes only calls his former partner Steve "Captain America".
