The Stranger is trying to choke the life out of the Black Knight for invading his cave. The Knight manages to break free but the man grabs for a scepter. The two clash their weapons and the Knight is surprised to see that his Ebony Blade does not slice through his opponents weapons. Noting that they both have the runes of Merlyn on them, the Black Knight realizes that this strange man is a brother in spirit. Hearing Merlyn's name causes the stranger to pause. Seeing the amulet around the man's neck, the Black Knight quickly deduces that this man is actually the hero once known as Captain Britain. When the Black Knight asks what happened to him, the former Captain can't remember. Not far from the cave, the Black Knight's foe Mordred plots to eliminate both men once and for all. With his magic wand he is able to summon forth an ancient monster made of stone and orders it to kill his enemies. Inside the cave, Brain Braddock senses a great evil and that it's coming their way.

Mordred has unleashed an ancient rock monster to destroy his foes the Black Knight and Brian Braddock. As the Black Knight rides his horse Valinor out of the cave they are holed up in, it creates enough of a distraction for Braddock to change into his Captain Britain costume.

The Black Knight is easily knocked off his horse sending his Ebony Blade flying. When the rock monster tries to grab for it, Captain Britain trips up the monster with his Star Sceptre. Britain then recovers the enchanted sword and returns it to the Black Knight. When Captain Britain tries to strike the rock monster, he finds that it is far too strong to be destroyed by hand. Getting an idea, the Captain gets on the back of Valinor and tells the Knight to fly past a certain area. Sure enough, the rock monster follows after them and steps into a patch of quicksand which Braddock had known about. Soon their foe is submerged in the mire and defeated.

Spotting Mordred on the beach, the Black Knight charges at him and tries to strike at him, but his foe suddenly disappears, leaving nothing but his cloak behind. Knowing who their enemy now is, the Black Knight tells Captain Britain that they are now comrades in arms.

This has led to a speedy escape in a stolen car with Night Raven in pursuit. This chase has also attracted the attention of a motorcycle cop who tries to get Scoops to pull his car over. When Night Raven catches up in his own vehicle he exchanges gunfire with the crooks. Eventually, one of the vigilante's bullets strikes the tire of the car causing it to lose control and crash.

Recovering from the crack-up, Scoops finds that his captors are unconcious as well as a black bag they were carrying containing tons of stolen money. Scoops is enticed by the fact that it is more money than he makes in a year and decides he needs to go someplace safe to think about what to do with the money. Running to an earby barn, he finds it locked and when he turns he sees the Night Raven standing before him. Begging for his life, Scoops insists that he is not a criminal and passes out when the Night Raven places his hand upon Daly's forehead. Instead of being branded and killed by the vigilante, Scoops wakes up later he has been spared and the two crooks killed with the Night Raven's mark. Scrawled on the door of the barn is the Night Raven's trademark statement.

Scoop comes back with his story which lands on the front page, even though he didn't find out who the Night Raven was. However, Scoop is determined to find out, if only to thank the masked vigilante from steering him away from the temptations of crime.
