History

Human/Mutant War[]

In the mutant-human species war on Earth, the mutant leaders of the nation of Krakoa sanctioned a mutant breeding program run by Mister Sinister in Mars in order to guarantee the maintenance of mutant population. The project focused on creating mutant warriors with militaristic and aggressive traits. The third generation of Sinister mutants comprised Chimeras, mutants with amalgamated DNA that featured up to five X-Genes from different sources. This generation resulted in almost one tenth of defective outliers, who developed passive and peaceful powersets and rejected conflict and individual identities. These variants became known as Cardinals and lent themselves to extreme pacifism and with an obsession with creating myths.[1]

An unnamed Cardinal with three slivers of mutant DNA joined the surviving X-Men based on Asteroid K; however, he retained his pacifist ideals and refused to engage in physical combat, respecting all life. In order to locate a collection of data from the Man-Machine Supremacy, Cardinal and the X-Men Rasputin, Cylobel, and Percival. Although they secured the device that informed the piece of data they needed, Percival was killed in action and Cylobel was captured as the Cardinal did not help in the fight and only created a Gateway for retreat. Rasputin blamed the Cardinal's inefficiency for their teammates' demise.[1]

Led by Apocalypse, the X-Men returned to Earth to gather the necessary intel for their plan.[2] In order to overcome his genetic predisposition to pacifism, Cardinal consumed a terminal Apocalypse seed to join the war. He massacred cultists from the Church of Ascendancy who venerated machine life as a distraction, but was ultimately slain by Omega and her Sentinels. The X-Men were successful in acquiring the information they needed and infused Moira with it. As Wolverine killed her after that, he triggered her resurrection powers and reality was rebooted.[3]

His powers have not been revealed.[1]
