Carina Tivan is the benevolent daughter of the Collector who currently leads the Battlerealm alongside her council.[2] After being transformed into an ISO-8 statue, shattered, scattered across the Battlerealm,[3] and reconstructed, Carina was revived with a unique connection to the Battlerealm by the power of Ægon's ISO-Belt.[4] Although she only wants the best for those trapped in the Battlerealm, Carina's position as the Grandmaster's successor and the third Elder of the Universe leading the Battlerealm has made her a contentious figure and the target of the Chronoserpent and Ouroboros.[2][5]
History
Crystallization[]
At some point after her mother's death, Carina Tivan joined her father, Taneleer, and fellow Elder of the Universe, En Dwi, on an expedition through the storm between realities into the Battlerealm. After pinpointing a Celestial fused to the core of the planet as the source of ISO-crystals, Carina independently journeyed into it against her father's wishes. Explosive energy from the Celestial cast En Dwi into space and transmuted Carina into a crystal statue of ISO-8, intertwining her essence with the Battlerealm as its Cornerstone. When Taneleer inadvertently shattered his daughter, he became the Collector in hope of gathering and piecing her back together.[6][4][3]
As the Cornerstone[]
Three eons later, the Maestro deceived the Collector into helping him organize the seventh Contest of Champions, promising to repay him with the power to revive Carina.[3] When Sentry caused the Contest's first dry run to fail by being too powerful, he was tasked by the Collector to retrieve the shard of Carina's heart and vanished, presumed dead.[7]
The Collector eventually inherited the Contest following the Maestro's defeat on Battleworld, prompting En Dwi, now known as the Grandmaster, to return and usurp his dominion, destabilizing the Battlerealm's structure in the process.[8] The Summoner's covert network of Champions discovered Carina's fragments, identifying them as part of the Battlerealm's foundational Cornerstone, and theorized that its reconstruction would prevent collapse. The Grandmaster noticed their collaboration, but permitted the Cornerstone's reconstruction only after the Summoner beat his game. Doctor Strange magically reconstructed the Cornerstone, revealing the crystal form of Carina Tivan.[1]
Successful in retrieving Carina's heart, Sentry returned but was overtaken by the Void, who sought revenge for being lost for thirty-five years. Following the Void's takedown by the Summoner, the Collector secured Carina's final piece[7] but failed to restore her life with the remainder of his ISO-power.[4]
Rebirth[]
The Grandmaster and the Champion's partnership to restore the ISO-Sphere's power endangered Carina's essence across the Battlerealm, prompting Ægon to return and end it. Driven to heal, Ægon used the power within his ISO-Belt to revive Carina,[4] who was now able to manipulate ISO-8.[2]
Carina's introduction to the Battlerealm alarmed those who considered her a progenitor of the Elder's oppression. Her reputation was further jeopardized when she accidentally produced a harmful flow of Black ISO-8 while trying to help the Avengers. While Carina found allies among the Summoner and those who understood her good intentions, the Grandmaster saw her powers as a threat and attempted to use the Champion armed with the Power Stone against them. Upon amending her mistake, Carina sensed the Battlerealm's instability and the impending threat of the Chronoserpent's return.[2]
During Mister Fantastic's trial, Carina revealed that his decision to have Galactus consume Battleworld would doom the civilizations it developed with its accelerated passage of time. Upon this revelation, Mister Fantastic surrendered his case and began working to amend his mistake.[9]
Succeeding the Grandmaster[]
Carina was among those who aided the Summoner in defeating the Grandmaster. Just as the Collector began to boast, Carina warped him and the Grandmaster away so they could work out their differences. Carina claimed the ISO-Sphere and established her council in their place to let the Battlerealm's denizens represent themselves. After the council adjourned, Carina shattered space-time to interrogate and threaten the malevolent Chronoserpent.[2][10]
The ISO-Sphere went missing, prompting a search for its whereabouts by Carina and the Summoner, who were later joined by Guillotine. They secured the ISO-Sphere from Gwenpool, who was toying with the ISO-Sphere and causing tears in reality. Meanwhile, Kang had used her mayhem to quickly conquer the Battlerealm. Kang called for his alternate counterparts to support him against the Summoner but he was instead betrayed by Superior Kang, the sole Kang to appear. Superior Kang effortlessly overpowered the Summoner and seized control of the Battlerealm. Since Superior Kang was not familiar with Carina's abilities, she and the betrayed Kang helped the Summoner liberate the Battlerealm.[11]
The Battlerealm was taken surprise by a horde of Galactus variants and the World Seed was taken from Asgard by Quicksilver amid their chaos. Carina tasked the Summoner to retrieve it, resulting in them learning about Galan's plan to end all cosmic hunger by sustainably growing planets with the Seed.[12] Carina later entrusted the Guardians of the Galaxy to escort the Seed, but they lost it in the void of space.[13]
Following a suspicious attack on Avengers Tower, Carina was debriefed by Civil Warrior on a shadowy organization called Ouroboros that sought to oppose her. Tracing the signal from enhanced Adaptoids lead the investigation into decrypting intel that someone named Scytalis was tasked with sabotaging Carina's relationship with the Avengers. Carina conjured a plan to draw out the infiltrator by setting Civil Warrior and the Summoner undercover as Iron Man and Captain America, respectively. When Scytalis was exposed and subdued by the Summoner, she warned that their leader, Glykhan, would consolidate his efforts against them before self-detonating.[5]
Their next apparent lead came when the Battlerealm's networks were hijacked by Ouroboros to broadcast their mission. Unfortunately, tracing the broadcast's origin lead the investigators into a trap, where Carina was publicly broadcasted being incapacitated by Bahamet's matrix of superheated ISO-8. Although the Summoner overpowered Bahamet, members of Carina's council sought explanation for what the Ouroboros broadcast revealed. With no time to deal with the council's bureaucracy, Carina continued the hunt for Glykhan, later revealing to the investigative team the truth about the Battlerealm's nature and stability.[5]Attributes
