Castle Camelot, also referred to as Castle Avalon,[1] serves as the seat of power for the regent of Avalon. Despite periods of upheaval and shifting rulership, it is traditionally associated with King Arthur's reign.

History

Following the fall of King Arthur’s kingdom in the earthly realm, Camelot was transported to Otherworld by the wizard Merlyn, becoming Avalon’s seat of power. Initially, Castle Camelot was situated on the edge of the Great Rift, a chasm that descended into the Netherworld.[2] Perched precariously on the brink of the abyss, the castle was sustained by Merlyn’s sorcery, with only a slender bridge connecting it to safer ground. This fragile structure also prevented the castle and its inhabitants from plummeting into the depths below.[2] The residents of Camelot lived in courtyards that led into the castle, which was surrounded by the dense expanse of Hildebrandt Wood.[3]

During the Nethergod Necromon’s assault on Camelot, the brave Gafael heroically guarded the bridge to the castle. In a final act of valor, Gafael hurled himself at the invading goblin Gog, sending them both plunging into the endless depths of the Great Rift.[4] As the battle between Necromon’s evil forces and Camelot’s defenders intensified, the bridge’s stability weakened further as Merlyn’s magical strength waned.[5] Necromon himself, accompanied by his generals, emerged from the depths to lead the assault personally.[6] In his final moments, after being mortally wounded by King Arthur and the Black Knight, Necromon tore the castle’s portcullis from its frame and used it to shatter the bridge securing Camelot to Otherworld. Both Necromon and Castle Camelot plunged into the abyss.[7] The Court of Camelot was subsequently relocated to Vortigen's Castle,[7] leaving the Great Rift and its surroundings uninhabited for years.[8]

Castle Camelot's current location

Castle Camelot was eventually rebuilt, though its location shifted to the southwestern tip of Avalon,[9] Under the rule of Queen Regent Morgan Le Fay, a gateway to Krakoa appeared inside the castle, drawing Avalon into conflict with the mutant group Excalibur.[10] This battle left the castle partially destroyed, and Jamie Braddock was crowned its new king and lord.[9] Beneath the castle, a secret laboratory was established, where Morgan Le Fay was imprisoned and subjected to experiments by Apocalypse.[9][1][11] After a subsequent civil war and a shift in leadership, King Arthur reclaimed Castle Camelot, restoring it as the seat of his rule once again.[12][13]
