History

Castle Doom is a medieval-styled palace which is the home of Doctor Doom, the self-proclaimed ruler of the small European nation of Latveria. It is located on a mountain top outside the capital city of Doomstadt (originally known as Hassenstadt) within the small Eastern European country of Latveria. It was once the royal palace of Hassenstadt. Its original name was Castle Sabbat, and it was the seat of power in Latveria for centuries.[5] In 1941, Nazi Baron Strucker coerced the castle's owner, Baron Sabbat, into allowing the castle to be used for the construction of a Sturmfänger machine. The machine was destroyed by time-travelling members of X-Force. Rumors of ghosts in the castle persisted for years afterwards.[6] The Baron Sabbat later became King Vladimir of Latveria,[7] and took up residence in the grander castle in Latveria's capital city.[8]

When Doom returned to his homeland of Latveria he set up his headquarters in the abandoned castle, now fallen into disrepair.[8] After overthrowing the government and killing King Vladimir, he destroyed the castle in the capital city and had himself proclaimed ruler of Latveria in the castle near where he was born, now renamed Castle Doom after himself. The nearby town was renamed Doomstadt and became the new capital of Latveria.[9] He then began using the castle and his country's resources in order to further his plans of world domination.[10] These schemes led Doom into conflict with the Fantastic Four on many occasions, as well as many other superheroes. It became the 9th wealthiest nation on Earth without virtually no crime or poverty due to the industrial and technological genius of Doctor Doom, and the entire country itself including mostly Castle Doom in Doomstadt is heavily patrolled and policed by Doombots which resembles the very same madman who created them.[10]

After Doctor Doom disappeared in New York during the events of Onslaught, the provisional government of Latveria attempted to gain access to Castle Doom. The castle's automated defense systems resulted in the death of half the government team, and the United Nations then claimed jurisdiction over the castle and everything in it.[5]

During the time that Lucia von Bardas was Prime Minister of Latveria, Nick Fury led an unofficial expedition to topple the Latverian government. This resulted in the complete destruction of Castle Doom by Daisy Johnson (later known as Quake).[11] The castle seemed to have been entirely rebuilt by the time of Doom's return to Latveria.[12]

Castle Doom (Doomstadt) from Maestro World War M Vol 1 1 001

Castle Doom was the home of Doctor Doom, which survived a nuclear war that devastated the world,[13] though it's unrevealed if the rest of Latveria did as well. After a fight with the Maestro[14] that left him badly injured and confined to a wheelchair,[15] Doom transported Namor, the Android Human Torch, and the Abomination to Castle Doom to help him defeat Maestro.[16]

Castle Doom (Doomstadt) from Maestro World War M Vol 1 5 001

After Namor ran amuck in Dystopia with a Giganto, Abomination turned against his allies and joined forces with Maestro. While Maestro kept Namor and Doom preoccupied, Abomination hacked into Doom's computer system and used it to take control of Human Torch's systems, causing his pyrokinesis to go out of control, which destroyed Castle Doom and killed Doom, Human Torch, and Namor.[17]

Namor: Conquered Shores (Earth-TRN973)[]

Castle Doom (Doomstadt) from Namor Conquered Shores Vol 1 3 001
Decades after the Kree devastated Earth, resulting in the melting of the polar ice caps and flooding of much of Earth's surface, Latveria became an island. Castle Doom survived, but Doctor Doom no longer lived there, killing years ago by Kree assassins. Castle Doom eventually became a refuge for human survivors who were protected by Frankenstein's Monster and a group of Doombots the Monster took control of. The Monster also killed any Atlanteans that too close to Latveria, believing them to be a threat. When the Sub-Mariner and Luke Cage came in search of the Human Torch, the Monster believed that Namor wanted to kill the humans, leading to a confrontation that ended when Namor rescued a human child.[18]
