"Conan of the Isles" was a novel written by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter and featuring the Sword and Sorcery character Conan created by Robert E. Howard. It was first published in October 1968.[1]
Marvel Comics[]
The novel was adapted by Marvel Comics in the story "Red Shadows and Black Kraken!" (Conan the Barbarian Annual #7, 1982). Although the issue announced that the sequel would be published the following year, Conan the Barbarian Annual #8 doesn't include such stories.
"Red Shadows and Black Kraken!" was later republished in Marvel Graphic Novel #42: Conan of the Isles (1988), along parts II and III of the story.
Sequels[]
A sequel, "The Necromancers of Na'at", based on the Zothique story "Necromancy in Naat" by Clark Ashton Smith, was published in Conan the Savage #10 (May, 1996) as the sole story of the final issue of the series.
After the return of Conan to Marvel Comics, another sequel, King Conan Vol 2 (2022), was published. The story pretty much ignores the tales mentioned earlier, reprising only Conan's abdication in favor of Conn and his travels westwards, including in Antillia. Part of the setting, especially surrounding Thoth-Amon appear to be loosely based upon "Shadows in the Skull!" by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, adapted in King Conan #4 (September, 1980), while contradicting with it.
