Merge Proposal[]

I don't see how merging all 350+ characters into the Index is a good idea. The way I understand it, the Index originated as a way to list minor, mostly one-panel appearances without creating a bunch of one-note TRNs. That it has lately gone on to include characters with multiple appearances or those whose alternate realities appear on page in a complete storyline (such as Amazing Spider-Man: Full Circle #1) is a whole other thing which could be addressed elsewhere. This category meanwhile originated as a way to differentiate transplants from an unknown reality into an established one, with understanding that they clearly deserve a proper page. For example, almost every alternate of Bishop or Miles Morales could be put in here, as they didn't originate in the realities in which they appear.

Currently this category is mostly populated by characters from either Marvel Contest of Champions or Secret Wars (2015 Event), both of those explicitly dealing with a bunch of characters from all over the Multiverse put together in one place, their realities of home origin often left unknown. There is a reason that we've put all Zombies of the Deadlands on a list while splitting the list of Thor Corps members indo inividual pages: even when their reality/domain of origin is unknown, most of them clearly have enough unique information to fill a proper wiki page. The Earth-Unknown Character Index was created for exactly the types of characters whose home reality is never shown or otherwise deemed unsuitable for a TRN. The reason the Deadlands zombies are all on a single article is simply because I proposed we do it that way before we ended up with a bunch of stubs, but those too could (and should) be merged into the Earth-Unknown Character Index, as that's the whole point of the index. Also, the vast majority of those Thor Corps members from unknown realities weren't originally supposed to be individual articles either, they were simply moved to such via unilateral decision months ago. Anyway, I'm not saying every single article in this category should be merged, but there are a bunch of stubs like 89P13 (Earth-517), Matthew Murdock (Noir) (Earth-13122), May Parker (Earth-12131), or Peter Porker (Earth-TRN199) that absolutely should be, and we all know it. -- Annabell (talk) 09:37, May 18, 2020 (UTC)
The only reason I started this category was the limitation of the Character Template. Currently, the "Universe" field must have value for "Universe2" to take effect, but the "Universe" field cannot properly process clarifications such as "(currently displaced to Earth-517)" either. So for characters such as Anthony Stark (Earth-517) (who do have enough history for a proper page by the way) to be correctly listed as Displaced to Earth-517 filling "Universe" with Earth-Unknown was the only logical choice. If the admins do deem this category unnecessary, might I suggest a tweak to Template to allow Universe2 field be counted with a proper Universe listed? Failing that, I can simply revert all the changes that I've made and add necessary categorizations manually, as putting only "alternate reality" game characters on the Index seems very arbitrary.
