—Venus[source]With the golden girdle, Cestus, around my waist, I have the power of love over man or god!
The Cestus of Venus was a divine Grecian girdle or belt created by Hephaestus for the Goddess of Love.[8][9] Because she was untrained in combat, Aphrodite relied on the Cestus to avoid physical confrontations.[10]
History
Venus chose Namor, the Sub-Mariner to battle Ares in order to allow her to stay on Earth and promote peace and love over war. In the battle her Cestus was removed from her person, leaving her without the ability to sway the god. However, as the battle continued, Namor retrieved the Cestus, and Venus used it to influence Ares into stopping a war of his own making and to leave Earth alone.[1]
In the modern era, Venus took on the guise of Dr. Victoria Starr until Pluto, Ares, and Hippolyta arrived and attempted to force Venus to marry Ares and Hercules to marry Hippolyta. Using her Cestus, Venus aided the Champions in defeating the Olympians.[11]
Aphrodite giving her Cestus and the title of "Goddess of Love" to the Siren Venus
During a mission to infiltrate the Olympus Group, a Siren posing as Venus and the Agents of Atlas were confronted by the real Aphrodite. During the ensuing battle, Aphrodite came to the realization that she hadn't felt love ever since the Trojan War. Aphrodite then passed the title of "Goddess of Love" and the Cestus to Venus so that the other Olympians would recognize her as the official Goddess of Love.[12]
