History

The Ch'i-Lin were warrior-demons who craved the egg of Shou-Lao the Undying. Taking advantage of their hunter, Quan Yaozu sent the Ch'i-Lin to hunt down Iron Fists on their 33rd birthday when their chi matured to siphon their chi for himself.[1] One such Ch'i-Lin hunted down many Iron Fists to use their hearts to gain access to the egg. This Ch'i-Lin succeeded in reaching Shou-Lao's egg in K'un-Lun after killing the Iron Fist Kwai Jun-Fan but failed to consume it after its jaw was severed by Lei-Kung the Thunderer. Decades later, the same Ch'i-Lin would attempt to hunt down but fail to kill the Iron Fists Orson Randall and Danny Rand.[2]

When Mara fought Danny and Pei, he turned several humans into Ch'i-Lin to fight against the two Iron Fists.[3]

The same Ch'i-Lin that failed to kill Danny on his 33rd birthday made another attempt on his next one under the orders of Quan. Although Danny had since retired as Iron Fist and killing him wouldn't have access to Shou-Lao's egg, the Ch'i-Lin wanted to do so out of revenge and succeeded.[4]

When Danny was resurrected as the Ghost Fist, Quan Yaozu sent a group of Ch'i-Lin called the Wraithlins to attack Ghost Fist.[5] After Quan was defeated, the Ch'i-Lin vanished from the city.[6]

Powers and Abilities

Powers

  • Chi Absorption: Ch'i-Lin can absorb the chi of Shou-Lao by consuming its unhatched egg or through an Iron Fist.[7]
  • Chi Dampening/Negation: The Ch'i-Lin are able to weaken the chi of Shou-Lao that resides within Iron Fists.[8]
  • Chi Detection: The Ch'i-Lin possess the ability to sense the chi of Shou-Lao, allowing them to track Iron Fists and predict their attacks.[7]
  • Superhuman Strength[9]
  • Superhuman Durability[9]
  • Superhuman Speed[10]
  • Possession: The Ch'i-Lin can inhabit human bodies, who become greatly empowered by the Ch'i-Lin possessing them. The host also gains the same powers as the Ch'i-Lin, including being unable to age.[9][5] However, despite the Ch'i-Lin's immortality, their host bodies can be killed.[11]
  • Mind Control[7]
  • Immortality: Although they can still be injured and weakened, Ch'i-Lin are incapable of being killed.[11]
  • Regeneration: Ch'i-Lin can heal themselves from serious wounds and replace severed limbs, although the time they take to recover varies depending on how serious their injuries are.[11]
  • Illusions: Ch'i-Lin can cast mind-altering illusions to confuse and disorient its victims.[4]

Weaknesses

Ch'i-Lin are reliant on the chi of Shou-Lou and cannot detect or sense it if an Iron Fist dampens or hides their chi. They also cannot predict uncoordinated attacks.[12]

The energy attacks and martial arts techniques used by Ghost Fist which were taught to him by the god Osiris are the only known methods that can truly kill a Ch'i-Lin or expel one from its host without killing the latter.[13]

Ch'i-Lin cannot possess or control humans who have a high level of faith, such as Daredevil, who is a devout Catholic.[14]

Notes

  • The Ch'i-Lin are probably based upon the mythical qilin (same pronunciation). However, unlike their demonic counterparts, the qilin are so kind and pure-hearted that they refuse to kill any being.
