The Champions of the Five Weapons Society are the best fighters representing each of the five Houses of the Five Weapons Society. The Champions are the successors to the Deadly Warriors.

History

After losing one of Society's Houses to Western invaders during the Boxer Rebellion, Zheng Zu relocated four of the five Houses outside of China, with each House hosting scores of Warriors with the best one being named the Champion of their House. Five of Zheng Zu's children would be raised in each of the Houses, with each of them emerging as the Champion of their respective House.[1]

By the present day, the Society had devolved into a criminal empire bent on destroying the western world. After discovering his father's evil nature, his son Shang-Chi defected from the organization, embarking on a years long campaign to dismantle Zheng Zu's criminal empire, eventually resulting in Zu's death. Unbeknownst to Shang-Chi, he was the designated Champion of the House of the Deadly Hand, which was left in shambles following his conflict with his father.[2]

After Zu's death, the title of Supreme Commander was passed onto his son, Brother Staff, who shifted the Society's goals to monetary gain rather than conquest. Staff's rule is challenged Sister Hammer, who usurped control from him following a duel to the death. Even though Zheng Zu's spirit selected Shang-Chi as his successor, Hammer named herself as the new Supreme Commander, prompting the remaining Champions Brother Sabre and Sister Dagger to seek out Shang-Chi to reclaim his rightful place as the Society's legitimate ruler.[2]

The Champions of the Five Weapons Society Enter Ta Lo

Following Sister Hammer's defeat and defection from the Society, Shang-Chi embraced his role as Champion, Brother Hand, and became the new Supreme Commander of the Society.[3] After discovering the existence of his exiled half-sister, Zhilan, Shang-Chi convinced her to rejoin the Society as the new Champion of the Deadly Staff.[4] When Brother Sabre's theft of a Cosmic Cube led to a battle between the Society and the Avengers and their allies, Shang-Chi had Brother Sabre stripped of his title as Champion and handed him over to the Avengers.[5] When Chieftain Xin created several Taotie to destroy anyone possessing the blood of Zheng Zu, Shang-Chi rescued Brother Sabre and Sister Hammer from these attacks and reinstated them as Champions of the Five Weapons Society.[6]

The Champions of the Five Weapons Society traveled to Ta-Lo to stop Xin and rescue Jiang Li but were captured and imprisoned by the Jade Emperor for trespassing. After Xin donned his Taotie Mask, he went to the dungeons holding the Champions to destroy Zheng Zu's bloodline once and for all.[7] Shang-Chi took the Ten Rings from the Emperor's vault to fight Xin, but lost six of the Rings to Xin, who defeated them with the Rings and immediately fled to the House of the Deadly Hand to join the Qilin Riders in destroying the Society. Shang-Chi used the remaining four Rings to protect himself and his siblings, which was witnessed by the Emperor, who then tasked the Champions with apprehending Xin and returning all of the Ten Rings, providing them with Qilin to travel back to Earth. At the House of the Deadly Hand, Shang-Chi confronted his grandfather again, but lost the remaining Rings to Xin, who then ordered the Riders to destroy New York City, prompting the other Champions to protect civilians. Shang-Chi gave in to his dark desires, reclaiming all of the Ten Rings from Xin and unlocking their full potential, but also gave him the appearance and personality of Zheng Zu. Shang-Chi used the Ten Rings to easily defeat Xin and the Qilin Riders, but before a corrupted Shang-Chi could execute Xin, the Champions and Jiang Li talked him down, freeing him from Zu's influence and sparing Xin. After the Society repaired the damage done to the city and Xin and the Ten Rings are returned to Ta Lo, the Champions go their separate ways, with Brother Sabre returning to the Vault to finish his remaining sentence, Sister Staff and Sister Dagger returning to their respective Houses and Sister Hammer leaving during the night, leaving Shang-Chi alone at the House of the Deadly Hand but his relationships with them improved.[8]

Trivia

Within the Society the Champions are referred to as "Brother" and "Sister" but to outsiders they publicly address themselves with the title "Deadly" (Deadly Dagger, Deadly Sabre, etc.).[9] However, several non-Society members such as Jimmy Woo and Wolverine have addressed the Champions as Brother or Sister instead of Deadly.[10][11]
