Aiko was a Yoshiwara prostitute who had been beaten by a client and would still have been beaten had it not been for Butterfly's intervention.[1]
After the Daimyo's death, Akio asks Butterfly if she was the one who killed him as they murmured around and when Butterfly denied killing him Akio asked her if she had the chance if she would.[2]

In a tavern, arguing with other people, Akio declared that the Daimyo was a tough person but he could keep the bandits in check.[3]

Braddock

An English navy captain who moved to Japan and married a local woman and from their union was born O-Chiyo, nicknamed Butterfly. When the Daimyo took possession of his lands, he committed suicide, and his daughter O-Chiyo was sold to a brothel.[1]

During a conversation between acquaintances in a tavern Daiki replies to Akio that the Daimyo is more interested in hunting than in matters of state and he also escapes a rumor where he declares softly that rather than hunting hawks he is more interested in hunting for women who are sent to him from Yoshiwara.[3]

Haiko

Haiko was Sato's wife and convinced that she and her daughter would be desecrated by Akagi after the death of her husband, killed her daughter and later committed suicide.[4]

Hajime

Hajime was Akagi's battle companion. He was with Akagi returning from the Korean campaign when they arrived at Akagi's house finding it destroyed and his wife and son dead.[4]

Hideo

Hideo was the nephew of the village elder, after the refusal of the warrior Monk, was skeptical about the elders' ways of wanting to deal with the bandits. After talking to a samurai who actually turned out to be a coward, the village obtained the help of the warrior monk who had previously refused him and after the clash with the bandits Hideo was unable to understand the ways of the monks and samurai.[5]

Haiko was Sato's daughter, and since her mother was convinced that both would be desecrated by Akagi after her husband died, she killed her daughter Kiku and later committed suicide.[4]

Namiko was the old housekeeper of Akagi's house and told her master of the death of his wife and son.[4]

Sakura was a prostitute from Yoshiwara and went on to ask Butterfly how she understood men. When a Ronin showed up, Sakura asked Butterfly if she had any intention of making a deal with that filthy Ronin.[1]

Sato

Sato was a soldier of the Daimyo who participated in the raze of the Akagi house and had profaned corpses of his family and despite having retired from the Daimyo services Akagi killed him in his own house.[4]

Senkichi

Senkichi was a neighbor of Sato and found his body after he was killed by Akagi. Together with two others they hunted Akagi but when they found him it was Senkichi and the other two who found death.[4]

Shimada

Shimada was the elder of the village accompanied by his grandson went to the top of the mountain in search of help from the Monk against a band of bandits who wanted to plunder the village, but the monk refused to help them.[5]

Hideo's beloved, after the victorious clash against the bandits who wanted to plunder the village, wondered what had convinced the warrior Monk to abandon his mountain to help them.[5]

Taro was soldier of the Daimyo and in a tavern he told his comrades how a man had killed many bandits, describing him as if he were Death a few moments before Akagi entered the tavern killing him and the other two men.[4]
