History

Papa Jambo was a venerated Houngan of the Voodoo tradition in Haiti. He had preserved the music and rituals of Voodoo for several generations, and some believed that he was actually far older than that of a normal mortal.[citation needed]

Papa Jambo was a pedagogue and trainer of several priests who held the title Brother Voodoo. Papa Jambo tutored young Daniel Drumm until such time that he was ready to adopt the mantle of Brother Voodoo. Several years ago, a pawn of the Serpent God, Set, named Damballah came to Port-au-Prince to take control of the local communities. Daniel Drumm opposed Damballah, claiming that he was a zobop (a false god). Damballah cursed Daniel and used a Voodoo doll to weaken and ultimately kill him. Daniel’s brother, Jericho Drumm, having only recently returned to Haiti from the United States, swore to avenge his brother’s death. He was present to hear Daniel’s final words. Daniel begged him to seek out the aged Papa Jambo and implore him to save the town from Damballah.[citation needed]

Carrying his brother's corpse on his back, Jericho traveled deep into the jungle until he found the old man’s hut. The trip proved dangerous, and Jericho nearly died of exhaustion. Papa Jambo took him in and nursed him back to health. He used his knowledge of Voodoo to bind Daniel's Loa (or spirit) to Jericho. He then trained Jericho to take his brother's place as the new Brother Voodoo. After teaching him everything that was required to combat and defeat Damballah, Papa Jango passed away.[citation needed]

A Houngan named Dramabu later revived Papa Jambo and used him as a zombie in a failed attempt to destroy Brother Voodoo.[1]
