History

Charlie-26 was a Jovian who was born in Earth's colony on Jupiter in the 30th century. He and his wife lived there and had one child, a son they named Charlie-27,[1] who was born in Galileo City in 2981 A.D. Charlie-26 and his wife were both mine workers[2] but Charlie-26 also served in the same militia which his son would later join.[3]

In the year 3007 A.D., while Charlie-27 was away from Jupiter on six months of solitary space-militia duty, the alien Brotherhood of Badoon invaded the solar system and swiftly conquered Earth and its colonies. Although Charlie-27 lost radio contact with Jupiter two months before his tour ended, he somehow was not alarmed and did not learn about the Badoon conquest until he returned to Jupiter and was attacked soon after landing. Hoping that his folks might still be alive, Charlie-27 went to the home he shared with them and arrived just in time to see his father among a group of Jovian prisoners in a vehicle that was taking them to Eastern Zone Council Labor Camp-19. After stealing a rocket car, Charlie-27 followed the transport to the labor camp where he discovered that the prisoners were being forced to mine high-intensity Harkovite without protection, something that would cause them to die of radioactivity in five days. Charlie-27 wanted to immediately break his father out but, after subduing a single guard, he found himself faced with more Badoon than he could handle and realized that he would die for nothing if he stayed and fought. Deciding to get off Jupiter and join the rest of the United Lands of Earth forces in order to be able to liberate his people, Charlie-27 fled, hoping that he would be able to return in time to save his father. However, since the Badoon conquest had been complete and there were no U.L.E. forces to be found, there was no rescue attempt. Charlie-26 is presumed to have died in the labor camp.[1]

Years later, in 3016 A.D., Charlie-27 and his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy were on the space station Drydock whose central computer had become deranged after its entire crew had died. In order to save his friends from the insane computer's plans, Charlie-27 made his way to the central computer core where be began smashing its circuits. In an attempt to stop him, the computer used militia records to create a hologram of Charlie-26 who tried to bribe Charlie-27 by offering to give him his family back. Although this tactic caused him to experience great grief, Charlie-27 completed his mission, smashing the computer and saving his friends.[3]

Attributes

Powers

  • Due to his Jovian ancestry, Charlie-26 is 11 times stronger and 11 times denser than a normal human being.

Notes

  • Charlie-26's name was first revealed in the entry for Charlie-27 in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #2. That same entry identified his wife as "Mabel-15" but all subsequent handbook entries have stated that her name was "Mabel-17" instead. None of these names have ever been spoken or referenced in any published story.
  • The first Guardians of the Galaxy story in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 depicted Jupiter as a planet with a solid surface where the Jovians lived and where Harkovite could be mined. However, since the real Jupiter is a gas giant with no solid surface, the story in Defenders #26 retconned Jupiter-691 into being like its real world counterpart and established that the Jovians actually all lived in giant city-spheres that floated in Jupiter's atmosphere. Since it was thus impossible for anyone to mine Jupiter, Charlie-27's profile in Avengers: Roll Call #1 later established that the Jovians actually mined the moons of Jupiter instead.
  • A retelling of the origin of the Guardians of the Galaxy in Guardians of the Galaxy #26 retconned Charlie-27 into being the last living Jovian, with all other Jovians having been killed by the Badoon before he returned home. As such, Charlie-26 did not appear in that story.
