History
Approximately 100 years ago, five interdimensional beings known as Clandestines[2] were exiled to Earth from their home in the Noor Dimension. Living among humans on Earth, some of the Clandestines started families, but they never gave up hope that they could someday return home.[1] The group's presence on the Earthly Plane has led to them being called a Djinn by locals in Pakistan, although knowledgeable groups like the Red Daggers were able to deduce that the Clandestines were called by that name due to their resemblance to the aforementioned supernatural beings of pre-Islamic folklore.[3]
In 1942, the Clandestines found one of two powerful bangles capable of unlocking the power of the Noor inside an underground temple in British Occupied India. Unfortunately, after obtaining the bangle, Aisha was separated from the rest of group. More than 80 years later, the bangle was sent from Karachi to Jersey City by Aisha's daughter Sana Ali to her own daughter Muneeba. When the package arrived at the Khan Family Residence, Kamala Khan obtained the bangle and incorporated it into her Captain Marvel costume unwittingly unlocking the Noor power inside herself.[4] Activating the bangle also alerted Najma and the Clandestines to Kamala and the bangle's location.[1]
Using Kamran, the Clandestines was able to get close to Kamala before revealing their history and desire to use the bangle to travel home.[5] However, using the bangle to open a portal to the Noor Dimension would theoretically require a massive amount of energy and be potentially very dangerous. When Kamala experienced hesitation, Najma and the rest of the Clandestines ambushed her at Aamir and Tyesha's wedding threatening to kill everyone to force Kamala to act. Kamala was narrowly able to hold off the Clandestines until Damage Control agents arrive to arrest them with Kamala barely escaping.[1]
The Clandestines was able to escape from DODC custody, but, on Najma's order, Kamran was left behind. Following Kamala, the Clandestines arrived in Karachi where they chased Kamala, Kareem and Waleed. During the attack Waleed, Aadam, and Saleem were all killed and Kamala was seemingly sent back in time by her bangle.[3]Notes
- Other than their name and Djinn origins, there appears to be little to no resemblance between this group and Clan Destine from the Marvel Comics' prime universe.
- Additionally, Ms. Marvel's showrunner, Bisha K. Ali, has confirmed that the Clandestines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are not the same with the djinn from Islamic Mythology, having chosen the name as a means to label what's "beyond their explanation".[6]
- In the show, Waleed even made an analogy on how Thor would've also been referred to as a djinn if he landed in the Himalayas.[3]
