History

In 1979, Clay Carter was a college student when he learned that a group of terrorists in Tehran had raided the American embassy and kidnapped the people there. Clay grew frustrated and wished that he had a way to serve his country, when suddenly he was visited by the Roman god of war, Mars.[2][3]

Mars imbued Clay with superhuman abilities that are directly linked to the planets. Clay has since taken an active interest in astronomy to learn about the planets, thereby learning more about his powers. As Man of War, Clay became the leader of the Protectors.[4]

He was ousted of his leadership after the battle against the being known as Extreme, a battle which unintentionally led to the destruction of Los Angeles and the teleportation of the mutant city of Sluggtown from its dimension, into where LA once stood.[5] While on the Protectors, Man of War developed a romantic relationship with Marcia Beckworth, the third Nightmask.[6]

Notes

  • Based on the original Golden Age Man of War, created by Paul Gustavson for Centaur Comics. The Golden Age version first appeared in Liberty Scout Comics #2 (Centaur Publications, June 1941).
  • However, Clay Carter is not the same as the Golden Age Man of War, as the Centaur Comics version of Mars wanted to strengthen the Nazi Powers to prolong World War II, and created Man of War by accident.[7] The Earth-1136 version of Mars deliberately chose Clay Carter a millennium ago to turn him into Man of War in 1979 for benevolent purposes.[2][3] Since there was no reference to Centaur's WWII-era Man of War in Protectors or Man of War's ongoing series, and Earth-1136's Mars was never shown as an antagonist, it means the Centaur Comics version of Man of War isn't canonical to Earth-1136.
  • Additionally, the Golden Age Man of War was never given a civilian identity,[8] and Clay Carter was a character/identity created for Protectors.
  • If Clay Carter received his powers while he was still a college student in 1979 according to the Protectors Handbook, that could mean he was born 1961 or earlier.
