History

Clay Wilson was a young inventor who worked as a teaching assistant at Empire State University. Desiring money and power, Clay stole a professor's experimental force field device and crafted a suit of armor, using the technology to become the super-villain known as Force. Defeated by Namor, Clay barely managed to escape and, desperate for the resources to rebuild his armor, agreed to work for Justin Hammer as one of his super-powered henchmen.[2]

While working for Hammer, Clay fought the hero Iron Man.[3] Most of his time, however, was spent attacking cargo ships owned by Hammer's rivals. Many people died on these attacks, causing Force to regret the choice he made in working for Hammer. When Clay turned against his handlers, Justin Hammer activated a failsafe function put into his armor that rendered Force mute, and unable to remove it without being killed by a lethal power surge.[4]

Contacting Iron Man and convincing him that he meant him no harm, Force was freed from his armor. Accepting Clay's desire to escape his life of crime, and having fought off a trio of super-powered assassins (Beetle, Whiplash, and Blizzard) sent to kill Clay so that he would not implicate Hammer as his boss, Iron Man decided to fake Clay's death and created a new identity of him, as Carl Walker.[5]

Under this new identity, Carl Walker, he began working as an employee of Barstow Electronics. Clay freely gave up his armor for Iron Man to study. Stark learned that the designs incorporated his own technology and angrily confronted Walker. Walker confirmed that Hammer had given him the designs, leading to the "Armor Wars," and was challenged by Stark one night over the deaths Walker caused as a Hammer minion.[6] Walker later donned the Iron Man armor to assist Stark against the Fixer.[7]

Along with Happy Hogan, Eddie March, Mike O'Brien, and Bethany Cabe, Force was asked by War Machine to help him battle Ultimo using refurbished Iron Man armors. Carl was forced to abandon the fight when the Iron Man Armor MK V he was wearing began to melt.[8]

As Iron Man against Ultimo

Years later Walker was commissioned to work for a Pentagon contract. Background checks revealed Walker's past, and he was blackmailed into working on appropriated Stark Armors by Sonny Burch. Walker was also falsely told that Stark had "outed" him as part of his appointment as Secretary of Defense. Stark explained that Burch, and not he, was responsible, and the two defeated Vitriol. Through Stark's government job as Secretary of Defense, Walker was granted a full pardon for his past crimes. Walker later worked with Stark on his plan to outfit all US armed forces with Iron Man technology, including combat training with a cavalry unit.[9]

When Tony Stark learned the existence of a highly-advanced black market network known as Source Control, he enlisted Carl to act as a frontman buyer, so that he could buy up their resources to shut them down discreetly. After operating for a month in Macau, Source Control's central hub, the organization caught notice of Stark's meddling. During Carl's attempted purchase of Time Displacement Blasters, Source Control operatives shot him with one of them, displacing Walker a week back in time. Carl was picked up by Source Control leader Spymaster, who manipulated Walker into believing that Tony was taking advantage of him, prompting him to renounce his "Carl Walker" identity in favor of his original name. After accepting a position within Source Control, Clayton was given the original version of his armor, and he helped Spymaster corner Tony Stark when he attempted to secure the Mandarin's rings.[10] Stark's protégée Ironheart had infiltrated Source Control on her own, and had bought the Mandarin's rings posing as the Cobalt Man. She arrived under the pretense of helping Spymaster, and after Iron Man beat up Wilson, she used the Mandarin's Black Light ring to get rid of Spymaster and Force by teleporting them away to the Darkforce Dimension.[11]

Walker is an accomplished inventor with skill in electronics and engineering. He also has some martial arts skill.[12]

Paraphernalia

Equipment

  • Force Armor: Walker uses the Force armor. The armor uses powerful forcefields and force beams, as well as generating an EMP. While the original version was given to Stark, Walker built a new version and has used it on occasion.[13][14][15]
    • Superhuman Durability: The Force Armor is made from impact, lightweight, titanium steel alloy meshing with a high resistance to injury, corrosion and heat.[16]
    • Superhuman Strength: The Armor amplifies his strength to superhuman levels, enabling him to lift 15 tons.[16]
    • Life Support: The armor has a two hours oxygen supply and can be sealed to travel in low oxygen or underwater environment.[16]
    • Force Fields: The Armor can generate extremely durable force fields. By surrounding his fists with force fields he can increase the amount of concussive force of his punches, enabling him to fight foes like Namor. His force fields are strong enough to support up to 25 tons. He can usually create force fields with a width up to 20 feet but with enough power he can surround an entire city. He can also electrify his force fields enough to disrupt a person's nervous system and cause death.[16]
    • Energy Projection: The Armor can discharge pure force bolts that gain strength the further they travel.[16]
    • Flight: The Armor boots contain two miniature magnetically powered turbines that enable him to fly at Mach 1.2 for a distance of 4,500 miles without having to recharge.[16]
    • EMPs: His Armor can generate electromagnetic pulses capable of shutting down any electronic device in a 50-yard radius. EMI shielding also protects the armor from EMP discharges or attacks.[16]
