History

Sir Clive Bentley was an old friend (or acquaintance) of Doctor Strange but no details about their relationship have been revealed.[1] Sir Clive had an interest in the occult and his butler, Edward Catherwood, assisted him in quite a few occult experiments.[2]

Many years after Sir Clive last spoke with Doctor Strange, Baron Mordo entered Sir Bentley's castle in London, mystically assumed his appearance and voice, and then made a phone call to Doctor Strange, identifying himself as Sir Clive and saying that he needed to see Strange at once. Although he found it odd that Sir Clive would call him after all those many years, Strange did not sense that he was talking to an imposter so he agreed to help and travel there. As soon as he hung up the phone, Mordo reverted to his true appearance.

After arriving at the unlocked and seemingly-deserted castle, Doctor Strange fell into Mordo's trap and had to seek help from someone in the area. His magically-projected thoughts were able to compel a local girl to come to the castle to rescue him. After being released from Strange's spell, the girl identified herself as Victoria Bentley, the daughter of Lord Bentley who had died in that castle ten years earlier. Hearing this caused Strange to realize that the person who had called him had been an imposter and the fact that he had not sensed it meant that Mordo was more powerful than he had dreamed.[1]

Notes

  • The story in Strange Tales #114 treats "Sir Clive Bentley" as being the same person as the "Lord Bentley" who was Victoria Bentley's long-dead father. However, in Strange Tales (Vol. 2) #12, Catherwood, while speaking with Victoria, states that Sir Clive was always pleased that his niece displayed strong latent occult powers, implying that Sir Clive was actually Victoria's uncle and not her father. No official explanation for this mistake (or retcon) has yet been provided.
  • If Sir Clive was Victoria's father, then it was he who died in that castle ten years before Strange visited it, and his status should be Deceased.
  • The castle in London is described as both "Sir Bentley's castle" and "the castle of Sir Clive Bentley." It is probably not the Bentley Manor seen in Strange Tales (Vol. 2) #12, even though Sir Clive did have a sanctum in that manor house.
