Synopsis for "Torment: Part 1"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Spider-Man #1
High above the claustrophobic city streets swings the amazing Spider-Man. He happens upon a mugging taking place in the back alley. Lowing himself down to the street, Spider-Man orders the mugger to leave his victim alone. The thief turns isn't afraid of the wall-crawler and opens fire. However, the masked hero easily dodges the bullets until the gun is completely out of bullets. Spider-Man then crushes the weapon with his bare hand and leaves the crook webbed up for the authorities. Meanwhile, at a mansion, the sounds of beating drums can be heard. The woman beating the drums then calls out, ordering someone to rise. Elsewhere, the Lizard emerges from the brackish waters, more savage then ever before.

At that moment, at his Soho apartment, Peter Parker complains about muggers to his wife Mary Jane.[Continuity 1] After his many battles against powerful super-villains, Peter wonders what thieves are thinking when they try to defy him.[Continuity 2] Hearing all this, Mary Jane quips that she finds it cute when Peter gets all philosophical. Elsewhere a rat scurries across a trash-strewn alley until it's caught by the Lizard. However, before the reptile can consume the rodent, he notices some men stealing televisions from a broken storefront window. Back at the Parker home, Mary Jane asks her husband if he's not getting a little high on himself. When Peter jokingly begins boasting how awesome he is, she begins to tickle him.

Meanwhile, the sound of the drums have driven the Lizard into a frenzy and he ambushes the thieves. Without a single shred of humanity or intelligence left, the Lizard slaughters most of the men. One of them however pulls a gun and shoots the Lizard repeatedly, apparently killing him. Back at the mansion, the woman's drums stop when the Lizard dies. However, she pricks her finger and bleeds into a chalice, causing the beat to begin again and the Lizard to rise again. Two of the thieves have attempted to flee into an alley, but unfortunately for them, the Lizard appears before them. With his gore-splattered hands, the reptile closes in for the kill. At dusk, Peter Parker is preparing to go out on patrol. After putting on his costume he tells Mary Jane that he'll be home before dinner and heads out, asking his wife to save the newspaper for him. The front page story in the Daily Bugle that day is about the senseless murder of three people. As Spider-Man swings across the city, he feels reinvigorated and wishes that his wife could experience the experience for herself, and figures maybe one day she will. His mind then turns to his current financial woes and wonders how Thor is able to perform feats of acrobatics with a cape.

As night falls, a man named Ralph Dill takes a shortcut through an alley to get home. Unfortunately for him, he happens upon the Lizard. Still, under the control of the mysterious woman, the creature slaughters him as well. As Spider-Man continues to swing across the city, he is completely unaware of the horror that is occurring in the alley below him.

Synopsis for "The Powder Chase"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Amazing Spider-Man #330
On an isolated New Jersey road, the Punisher waits for an ambulance full of drugs to arrive. When he approaches, the vigilante fires a bazooka at the vehicle. However, the driver swerves out of the way and crashes into a tree. Checking the back of the ambulance, the Punisher confirms that the ambulance is full of cocaine. Frank Castle guns down one of the drivers. The other begs for his life, promising to give the Punisher information that will lead him to the cartel that is responsible for the drug shipments. However, before the guy can talk, he is shot in the head. It is the other driver, who survived getting shot, but the Punisher ultimately puts him down. With no other leads, Castle torches the ambulance, destroying all the drugs inside hoping that his assistant Microchip can help him with the intel he has provided.

Meanwhile, in Manhattan, Spider-Man sets up his camera to photograph an armed siege on a penthouse apartment. The penthouse is owned by one of the Kingpin's drug dealers and the armed men have come to seize his cache of drugs. The dealer insists that he has no product on him. Before these armed men can open fire, Spider-Man comes crashing in and quickly webs everyone before phoning the police. Recovering his camera, Spider-Man swings around the city thinking about how tense things have gotten in the city because of an influx of drugs onto the streets. With the increase in drug-related crime, Spider-Man wishes he still had the power of Captain Universe to solve the problem.[Continuity 3] Hoping to stymie the flow of drugs in the city, Spider-Man's only lead is a delivery that is scheduled to arrive in Brooklyn the next day. Returning home, Peter Parker discovers that his wife Mary Jane isn't home from her "Secret Hospital" shoot.[Continuity 4] Seeing the dishes from the night before, causes Peter to recall the shock of discovering that his ex-girlfriend Felicia Hardy is dating Flash Thompson.[Continuity 5] At the time, Peter freaked out but had to back down lest he reveals his secret identity. Mary Jane covered by telling Flash that they had met Felicia before. Peter then had to bite his tongue as they all had dinner together, and wonder what Felicia's motivations are.[Continuity 6] As Peter gets down to washing the dishes, he figures he and Mary Jane talk about it before the situation gets worse.

Meanwhile, at the Vault Prison in Colorado, security reports that Eddie Brock has hung himself in his cell. Guards go down to the cell to check on him and discover that Brock is dead. This leaves one question: what happened to his alien symbiote. While at a warehouse in New Jersey, the Punisher tests out new munitions provided to him by Microchip. Frank's assistant has been working to find out where this current supply of cocaine is coming from. Although it originates from Columbia, Micro is unable to determine who is responsible for the shipments. However, he has learned of the drop happening in Brooklyn docks that evening. The Punisher tells Microchip that they can fill in the blanks when he investigates the Brooklyn shipment. That night, Spider-Man is staking out the docks when he spots a number of armed men arriving on the scene. Turning on his spider-signal, Spider-Man swings down to confront them. The thugs are about to retaliate but are stopped dead in their tracks. The wall-crawler's spider-sense begins going off warning him that there is something behind him. Turning around, he sees that the Punisher has arrived on the scene. The Punisher explains that he has come to determine if there are drugs aboard the ship, warning the web-slinger not to get in his way. Spider-Man tells the Punisher that he is there for the same reason and asks the vigilante if he would consider going in without guns. Unfortunately, the Punisher won't do such a thing and runs up to the ship with guns blazing.

They are opposed by armed guards aboard the ship. With lead flying all over the place, Spider-Man smashes through the floor so he and the Punisher can get into the cargo hold. There are more guards, which keep Spider-Man busy. Meanwhile, the Punisher discovers the cocaine hidden in barrels of coffee. He has cornered one of the armed men and demands that he gives up who their supply is. When the young man refuses and tries to shoot the Punisher, the vigilante mows them down. This upsets Spider-Man, who checks the body and can only find a card with a magnetic strip. The Punisher tells Spider-Man that he planted a bomb and they abandon ship before it goes off and sinks the ship full of drugs. Back at the Punisher's van, the vigilante has Microchip scan the card and track it to its source. He reveals to them that the man who was carrying the card was a member of the US Army. Although they now know that someone within the military is amassing the largest cache of drugs in the United States, the only question they have now is, why?

Before a federal judge, Joe Robertson receives a Presidential pardon, thanks to the hard work of Stuart McPhee.[Continuity 7] This brings cheers from Joe's friends and family who had gathered to hear the verdic. Among them are Peter Parker and his wife Mary Jane who are just as happy for Joe.[Continuity 8] Peter is also happy that he is finally rid of the powers of Captain Universe, however, he suddenly gets a flash from his spider-sense.[Continuity 9] Seeing no immediate danger, Peter dismisses it as an after effect from his enhanced powers. He is unaware that the prison is being watched by Hammerhead and Tombstone. Hammerhead muses how Joe Robertson gets pardoned, while Tombstone is an escaped felon.[Continuity 10] As a member of Hammerhead's crime family, the mobster assures Tombstone that he will make this right.

Three days later, Spider-Man pays a visit to Mister Fantastic at Four Freedoms Plaza to see if he has determined a cure for the Carrion virus yet. Richards admits that this is the most complex virus he has ever seen and asks about its origins. Spider-Man explains that it was a genetic virus created by the Jackal and that it turned an unsuspecting victim into the first Carrion.[Continuity 11] He explains that he found Miles Warren's notes that explained everything in detail. However, another sample of the Carrion virus infected fellow ESU student Malcolm McBride who has been held in the Vault until he could be cured.[Continuity 12] Reed tells him that the prospects of finding a cure are not looking good. Spider-Man explains that a cure is important as he didn't reveal McBride's true identity to the authorities and he has family that are wondering where he is.

That evening at a 20's themed jazz bar, the Hobgoblin comes to see Hammerhead, who secretly owns the establishment. People are horrified by his demonic appearance and when the bouncers try to throw him out, the Hobgoblin's suit gets ripped, revealing the costume he is wearing underneath.[Continuity 13] Furious at having his laughable cover blown, the Hobgoblin incapacitates the bouncers. The Hobgoblin enters Hammerhead's private booth and demands to know why his men attacked him. Tombstone points out that it must have had something to do with his face. The Hobgoblin, in denial about his recent demonic transformation, acts as if he doesn't know what he is talking about. Hammerhead gets down to business and tells the Hobgoblin that he wants him to eliminate Joe Robertson. This angers Tombstone, who wants to kill Robertson himself. Hammerhead is against this, telling Tombstone is too close to this to carry out the task properly. After discussing his fee, Hobgoblin agrees to eliminate Robertson for Hammerhead.

Later, at the Robertson household, a party is being thrown for Joe, celebrating his newfound freedom. As everyone is celebrating, Mary Jane notices that her husband Peter is running late. After being given a gold plated pencil from the Daily Bugle staff, J. Jonah Jameson then is about to offer Joe a position in his new business when Thomas Fireheart arrives.[Continuity 14] Fireheart congratulates Joe on his recent release and offers him the job as president and publisher of the Daily Bugle. This comes as a surprise to the Robertsons, so Joe and his wife Martha go outside to talk about it. This frustrates Jameson, who knows that he can't match Fireheart's offer. Outside, Joe and Martha finally have a chance to have a romantic moment together. However, this is interrupted by Hobgoblin who has arrived to kill Joe. The exploding pumpkin bombs draw out the other partygoers who all run for cover. Mary Jane hides in a bush with Thomas Fireheart and convinces him to turn into the Puma to defend Joe Robertson.

Meanwhile, the Hobgoblin orders Joe to beg for his life, but Joe refuses to do so. Before the Hobgoblin can toss a razor-bat, it is shot to pieces by an unseen sniper on a neighboring rooftop. While the villain is distracted by this, Puma leaps onto the Hobgoblin's glider and wrecks it. However, instead of falling to the ground, the Hobgoblin used his control over hell-fire to create a new one. He then blasts the Puma, sending him crashing into the bushes below. As he charges at the Robertsons, the Hobgoblin is snagged by a web line and tossed into a window by Spider-Man, who had just arrived on the scene. Mary Jane fills Spider-Man as to what is going on. Soon his spider-sense goes off warning him that the Hobgoblin is coming, but is still caught off guard.[Continuity 15] While Spider-Man struggles to stop his foe, the Puma recovers and comes to Spider-Man's aid. During the fight, a note that Spider-Man took from the Four Freedoms Plaza comes loose and the Hobgoblin grabs it. That's when the Puma leaps into the fight.

While the Hobgoblin is distracted by Puma, the mystery shooter fires again. Although the bullet creases the Hobgoblin's skull causing him to fire a finger-blast wildly. It strikes an electronic billboard and the burst of electricity is bright enough to cause Hobgoblin a great deal of pain and he flees the scene. Spider-Man thanks the Puma for saving his life and hopes that this clears the debt the mercenary feels he owes the wall-crawler. However, the Puma says it is not, but assures the masked hero that the debt will be paid off soon. This is because he wasn't the one who saved Spider-Man, but the mystery shooter that nobody but Puma was able to hear. Not far away, Tombstone lowers his gun, confident that he foiled the Hobgoblin's plans to assassinate Joe Robertson, a job that he wants to do himself.

Spider-Man is in the sewers hunting for someone and is determined to find them without giving up. Above ground, a group of people are gathered around a storm drain waiting for the wall-crawler to come back up. Suddenly, the hero returns to the surface with his quarry: a kitten that had fallen into the sewer. Handing the feline back to the little girl who lost it, the crowd cheers Spider-Man. The wall-crawler isn't sure how to handle people swarming him for autographs and abruptly leaves. Spider-Man can find it hard to believe that Thomas Fireheart's campaign to boost Spider-Man's popularity after years of J. Jonah Jameson's negative editorials and his recent bout of cosmic powers.[Continuity 16] As he mulls this over, his spider-sense goes off warning him of a man ordering a hot dog stand from a street vendor. However, he dismisses this as nothing and swings on his way.

However, the warning was legitimate, as the man buying a hot dog is his old foe the Molten Man. When he tries to pay for the hot dog, the frightened vendor tells him that it is on the house. this angers the Molten Man. However, before the scene gets anymore heated, a police car pulls up and asks Raxton if he is staying out of trouble. This makes Mark lose his appetite and as he turns and walks away he tosses the hot dog into the trash. Looking at the time, he realizes that it is almost time to meet with his stepsister Liz Osborn and he doesn't want to be late. Meanwhile, at the Soho apartment, Mary Jane shows her cousin, Kristy some of her old modeling photos. Mary Jane is happy to see that Kristy appears to be doing well since she was released from the Queens Medical Center's eating disorder unit.[Continuity 17] They are interrupted by Liz Osborn who has come up to tell Mary Jane that her step-brother is coming to meet her to get $10,000. At that same moment, Spider-Man is returning home. Seeing Liz through the skylight, Peter changes on the roof and enters his apartment by jumping down the shaft of the building freight elevator. He worries that Harry may be having problems, particularly since he briefly resumed his Green Goblin identity recently.[Continuity 18]

When he enters the apartment, Peter is brought up to speed on what's going on. When Kristy asks why they just don't call the police. Liz explains that her step-brother and how he left home after high school, on bad terms with her father. She didn't hear from him again until the accident that turned him into the Molten Man.[Continuity 19] She recalls how he recently came after her and her husband Harry but was stopped thanks to intervention from Spider-Man.[Continuity 20] Learning that Mark is due in 5 minutes, and with Harry due home with her son Normie, Peter tells the women to intercept Harry and delay him so he can deal with Mark.[Continuity 21] Waiting for Mark, Peter hears a knock at the door, however, instead of Mark Raxton, it is a woman named Edna Gorch, who has come because Osborn's conversion of this warehouse into a living space is in violation of municipal building codes. As she begins looking around, Peter's spider-sense begins going off and he is forced to shove Edna into a closet so he can deal with the Molten Man.

After being buzzed in, the Molten Man takes the freight elevator up to Harry and Liz's floor, but when he arrives he is confronted by Spider-Man. Raxton thinks the wall-crawler did something to his step-sister and begins attacking the wall-crawler. Spider-Man, however, is looking for a fight thinking that Raxton has come to extort her out of money. Try as he might, Spider-Man is quickly overpowered and knocked out. Molten Man stuffs Spider-Man into the Osborn's fridge and tosses it down the freight elevator. The Molten Man then rides the elevator down in the hopes of crushing the fridge beneath it. However, Spider-Man recovers from his beating and punches his way through the floor of the elevator. Needing to end the battle quickly, Spider-Man tosses the Molten Man up into the freight elevator's electrical source, shocking him into unconsciousness. In the aftermath of the battle, Spider-Man feels as though he missed something important about this encounter. Later, Peter Parker and Mark Raxton catch up with the Osborns. It's then revealed that Mark wasn't looking to extort his step-sister out of money, but to get a loan so he can start his life over. Harry declines his request but offers him a job at the family chemical plant as long as Mark keeps his temper in check. Mark is overjoyed and thanks Harry for giving him a second chance. The group end up going out to celebrate.

Meanwhile, back at the apartment of Harry and Liz, Ms. Edna is still locked inside the closet. She is knocking on the closet door while pleading with "Mr. Osborn" to let her out, but nobody can hear her.
