Cory Payne (Earth-616) from Defenders Vol 1 110 002

Cory was the wife of Eric Payne. Upon Eric's return from the war (historically the Vietnam War, likely now the Siancong War due to sliding timescale recalibrations), Cory left him for another man and began working as a nurse at a children's hospital. While at work, she became involved in the fight between two beings with superpowers, not realizing that one of them was Eric, now become "Devil-Slayer", while the other was Deathlok who confused her with her wife. Cory passed out, and upon waking she was saved from being attacked by two demons by Eric who by then she recognized him.[1] The two tried to get back together, but it didn't work and Cory left for Israel. There she became involved in a cult in which there was a healer named David Kessler who professed to be the new Messiah. There came Eric, who thought demons were involved, as indeed it turned out to be. With the truth revealed, Kessler impaled himself on Eric's blade rather than give in to the demons, and Cory mourned him deciding to stay in Israel and not follow Eric.[2]

Some time later she Cory was kidnapped by Ian Fate to take revenge on Eric by keeping her prisoner in another dimension, but not being able to kill an innocent he sent her back to Earth unharmed.[3] A few months later Cory met Eric in despair following Sunshine's death. Cory told him that he had found peace with faith and tried to make him join her, but Eric refused her by teleporting to the Negative Zone where he planned to commit suicide. Cory leapt into Eric's cape as he teleported and once in the Negative Zone told him she would follow him in death, so Eric convinced himself to try again to move on with his life and returning to Earth surrendered himself to the authorities, while Cory found a apartment near the prison to be close to Eric.[4]

When Cory convinced Eric to cooperate with law enforcement by turning over various criminals and mobsters he'd worked for as a hitman, he was placed under the Witness Protection Program, but when a mobster planted a bomb in Eric's car in revenge, Cory triggered the explosion and died.[5]
