The Council of Elders served as the judiciary and legislative branch of government.[8] They also ruled in the absence of Namor,[2] similarly to the purpose of Council of Three in past centuries.[11]
The Council of Elders could even banish the monarch and declare their death if they returned from exile.[2][3]
During the Modern Age, the Council of Elders was led by Lord Vashti.[7]
History
1920[]
As the surface-dwellers' ship the Oracle caused massive casualties to Atlantis due to bombardments of high explosives, the Elders commanded an army to be formed, and Fen to be sent as a spy on the Oracle.[9]
World War II[]
Due to an unsanctioned interference in surface-dwellers affairs during the early World War II, Namor was puzzled at how to explain it to his mother and to the Elders.[10]
Modern Age[]
Lord Vashti, Grand Vizier of Atlantis, became part of the Council of Elders.
Vashti stepped down from both position to avoid taking part in the vote to banish Namor until he would renounce his warlike ways towards humanity.[2]
Vashti later became the leader of the Council of the Elders.
Namor was counseled by a triumvirate of his closest advisers, including Vashti, Thakos (who acted as representative of the Council of Warlords) and Shakkoth (high priest at the Temple of Neptune).[7] Later, the Councils voted to ask Namor to abdicate, which he did, and power was put into the hands of the triumvirate,[12] who formed a Council of Three.[11]See Also
