Synopsis for "The Lighthouse from Nowhere!"

Strange Tales #87

Strange Tales Vol 1 87 001

Grogg, from Strange Tales Vol 1 83, returns in this story and our hero from last time discovers the communists building a spaceship large enough to take a thousand troops to Mars in order to threaten the planet with atomic blackmail. A farmer sympathetic to freedom fighters creates a diversion that allows the hero to launch the spaceship prematurely but the farmer states that the threat still exists, because they will just build another one eventually. Our protagonist says that he knows that, and that is why he made a small snow figure of Grogg and attracted the beast's attention and used the snow figure to cast a Grogg-like shadow upon the spaceship. The curious Grogg entered the craft and was blasted off to Mars. When the Soviets eventually build another one and make their way to Mars, they're going to find a maddened Grogg waiting for them.

Notes

  • Red Swords, Black Wings! is based on the Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria novel by Lin Carter.
