History
After the fall of Krakoa due to the actions of Orchis, Professor X sequestered himself on the island, succumbing to despair.[1] Unbeknownst to Xavier, Mr. Sinister, having implanted a piece of himself into Xavier's mind, began piloting Xavier's body while he slept, working on a way to defeat the Enigma, a dominion derived from his original self.[2]
After Xavier discovered Sinister in his mind, the two agreed to a détente in order to work together to stop the Enigma. The pair discovered that all four clones of the original Nathaniel Essex, including Sinister, had achieved dominionhood in various timelines created by Sinister's Moira Engine, only for their attempts to be usurped and consumed by the Enigma.[3]
In an attempt to undo Enigma from ever coming into existence, the pair moved No-Place to almost[4][5] outside of space-time, where they would be invisible to the Enigma. With Rachel Summers and Rasputin IV recruited to their cause, and Mother Righteous as their prisoner, allowing them to communicate with the mutants trapped in the White Hot Room, they embarked on their plan.[6] In order to hide his true identity from the others, in the fear that they would refuse to work with him, Sinister downloaded his consciousness into a clone of Cypher.[7]
The first attempt was to prevent Enigma's birth by undoing the four successful ascensions to dominionhood by the four Essex clones, with the nominally destroyed timelines accessible through the White Hot Room. While Rasputin IV was dispatched to prevent the ascensions, she ultimately failed, forcing them to turn towards another avenue.[6]
Xavier instead began planning to travel backwards in time to before Moira MacTaggert's powers manifested, in order to kill her. This would prevent Sinister from ever using her DNA to create the Moira Engine, and thus prevent Enigma from coming online, but also undo all the events that led to the creation of Krakoa.[7]
With help from the Five within the White Hot Room, the X-Men team selected and killed during the Hellfire Gala were resurrected and guided by Rachel into defunct timelines in search of a version of Moira who was still organic, unlike her mechanized counterpart in Earth-616.[8]See Also
