Culann was the royal hound of Conchobar mac Nessa, the King of Ulster, reigning in Emain Macha (modern-day Armagh, Northern Ireland).

When he was seven, Sétanta, the nephew of Conchobar mac Nessa, killed Culann's fierce hound. Sétanta offered to serve as a guard to replace the hound until a new one could be trained, and gained the name "Cúchulain", "the Houd of Culann".[1]
