After his son John was killed in a space-travel accident, J. Jonah Jameson donated a large sum of money to Curt Connors, who researched cancer treatment with radiation-resistant animal genes. While talking to Connors, Jonah was bitten by a radioactive spider that had escaped one of Connors' experiments.[1]
