History
The Cybertek Weapons Development Testing Facility 4 was a location in Paterson, New Jersey belonging to Cybertek Systems, Paterson-based Roxxon's applied cybernetics division. The Facility 4 included an area covered in flora to test Cybertek's military developments, and at least one safe bunker from where Cybertek staffers could control and monitor the test. The bunker was also used to host visitors and customers so as to demonstrate the weapon. The open area allowed for different kind of tests, including realistic combat simulations.[1]
Cybertek was involved in the development of a computer-controlled cyborg, Deathlok, using the brain and organic components of volunteer Colonel John Kelly. Satisfied with the project's progress, Cybertek head Harlan Ryker arranged for a test run in Testing Facility 4, where Deathlok (Kelly), armed only with paint pellets, was expected to defeate twelve[1] hired mercenaries.[2][1] Ryker aimed to impress several parties interested in renting Deathlok[3] and Ryker's own boss, Roxxon's Vice President Clayton Burr,[1][3] who wanted to send Deathlok against the guerrillas in Estrella[4] that threatened Roxxon's other projects there.[5] Kelly's performance was excellent.[6][7] Mid-exercise, Kelly tried to demonstrate his own moves as a show, but the onboard computer perceived this as a "programming fault" in the biological brain, understanding that Kelly was "malfunctioning"[3] by resisting its commands[2] and trying to sabotage the mission.[8][9] The computer then killed Kelly's brain[1][3] by electrocution,[10][2][8][9][3][11][12] lobotomizing the brain[8][9] to protect the cyborg from being controlled by an unauthorized agent.[3][6][7] Cybertek technicians Stanley Cross and Dr. Hu noticed the unexpected development, and offered to cancel the whole test, but Ryker countercommanded them. Controlled by the computer, the cyborg changed to use a lethal weapon, even against Ryker's orders, and even entered the bunker where Ryker and his guests were, but then stopped as his mission had been completed successfully.[1] Cybertek then took Deathlok to their main facility to replace Kelly's dead, useless brain[1][4] and to correct the situation that allowed the computer to kill the brain.[4][3][6][7]See Also
