• John Kirowan was created by Robert E. Howard in "The Children of the Night" (April and May, 1931).
  • In the adaptation of the story "Dig Me No Grave" (1937) in Journey Into Mystery (Vol. 2) #1 (October, 1972), written by Roy Thomas and penciled by Gil Kane, the character was renamed "Dan Kirowan" (while Conrad is only named "Professor Conrad"), possibly to avoid confusion and repetition (the three characters being originally named John).
• Another John Kirowan story, "The Haunter of the Ring" (Weird Tales; June, 1934), was freely adapted as a Conan story in Savage Sword of Conan #205 (January, 1993), with Conan taking the role of John Kirowan.
