History
The Danakil Depression[1] was the northern part of the Afar Depression, a region in Ethiopia.[2] The inhospitable Danakil Desert,[3] containing the activo volcano Erta Ale, was in the Danakil Depression.[1]
When the Phoenix Force posessed Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, and Sub-Mariner at once (The Phoenix Five),[4] and after the Sub-Marine was defeated and his power, divided between the other four Phoenixes,[5] threatened to corrupt them, Frost noticed how Cyclops was viciously attacking their enemies and how she herself was tormented by her own genocidal instincts and by her super-developed telepathy that gave her access to almost every mind in the world. Frost chose to retire to the Danakil Desert to meditate in as much isolation as possible. Cyclops, her lover, went after her to ask her to return with the team to their base in Utopia; she refused, but revealed to him that she had found Hope Summers, intended Phoenix host that both Cyclops and their enemies wanted, in K'un-Lun. Cyclops left Danakil on a rush, without giving any support to Frost, who wished for someone to stop her.[3] Soon afterward, Frost, corrupted, left Danakil to return to Utopia.[6]
Sometime later, Albert Cary, associated with Orchis, built an elaborate base on the Erta Ale volcano in order to test the powers of mutants so as to find ways to defeat them. Mutant and X-Force leader Beast learned of Cary's plan, and believed the results of his tests, which would put his agents and friends in mortal danger, would be valuable. The Beast convinced X-Force that Orchis had stolen a shipment of Flowers of Krakoa, and sent them to recover the supposed loot; the Beast did not inform other allies such as the Quiet Council of Krakoa, but Emma Frost and Sage discovered the mission and interrogated the BEast after X-Force had already left, uncovering the ruse. On Erta Ale, X-Force learned that there was nothing organic on the base, but only Sentinels and traps designed for their powers: Kid Omega was trapped with teleporting devices and subjected to psychic sonic cannon devices; Wolverine was immobilized with magnets that affected his metallic skeleton; and Domino fell into a trap that tested her luck. However, Domino's luck caused a brief eruption of the volcano that generated an electromagnetic signal that nullified the magnetic field immobilizing Wolverine, allowing them to break free and flee with a machine core with results, unaware that the Beast had used them.[1]Points of Interest
