But you both seem well matched against each other in this dark cold place. So what of a place that's darker? And colder? With a greater danger lurking...?

Loki[source]

The Dark Cold Room is a cold void-like pitch-black realm which houses Shadow King and other cosmic beings such as Annihilation, the First Fallen, the Adversary, Bete Noir and the Goblin Force. It is a place beyond death underneath everything that can be accessed through a dark door in the City of Judgment.[5][1]

History

The Dark Cold Room was visited by Ororo Munroe and Max Eisenhardt when attempting to escape from the sphere of judgment back into the path of life. They were met by the Shadow King and his peers composed of Annihilation, First Fallen, Adversary, Bete Noir and the Goblin Force. While Ororo fought the legion, Max was confronted by the Shadow King with representations of his rival and friend, Charles Xavier, and of his old self as Magneto. In the end, Magneto embraced his past self and anger as a part of himself, choosing to overcome it by choosing a new path. Uniting himself with Storm in a mutant circuit, they defeated the cosmic forces of the Dark Cold Room at the cost of Ororo's life force. Drawing from the life Storm shared with him, Max shared that power with Ororo in order to bring her back to life and used the same key he unlocked the Dark Cold Room with to come back to life himself through Blue Marvel's Portal Room.[6]

In their final battle against the Dark Olympians, the Guardians of the Galaxy sent Zeus as he was being restrained by Athena to the Dark Cold Room to finally defeat him.[7] Later, Thor, Hercules, Nyx, and her remaining children were transported to the Dark Cold Room by Loki as part of another test for Thor.[3] There Thor battled Zeus, while Hercules convinced Nyx to set up residence in this new environment. She got rid of most of her children as what they represented wouldn't be needed in her new kingdom, except for Hypnos who she tasked to report to her the happenings on Earth.[8] Thor was able to defeat Zeus, and having gained Yolgjörd, the God of Thunder left the Land Without Suns alongside Hercules and Athena carrying their weakened father.[9]

Trivia

  • The creator of this realm, Al Ewing, referred to the realm as the "Dark Cold Room."[1] This could mean that it is a qlippothic counterpart to the White Hot Room, connected to the Jewish Kabbalah's sephirot Tiphareth, named Thagirion. This qlippoth means the disputers and the painful movers, which maintains the ugly and evil forces together. The realm was also called the opposite number by the entities, while the number of the White Hot Room would be 6 on the tree of life.
  • The connection between the Adversary and Annihilation was first hinted in X-Men: Red (Vol. 2) #13 where Storm described the force behind the latter as "adversarial" and something she had faced before.
