Synopsis for "Deep Down"

Reprint of the 4th story from
Uncanny Tales #29

A man is chased by a monster in a cave and so blocks him in with a large gold nugget. He wants the gold but cannot figure out how to remove it without the monster getting him. Every year for 50 years he has returned to the surface and recruited another to help him think of a way to acquire the gold without being attacked. The story ends when all 50 men leave the cave after deciding that there was no way and the gold wasn't worth the effort.

Two brothers are incensed that their neighbors have put down a well that has dried up the well on their property so they lay pipe to divert the water back down to the well on their property. The channel works and they drink their fill of the water, until a water delivery man mentions that he was bringing up some water to the neighbors because some pesticides accidentally got dumped into their well, poisoning the water.

Synopsis for "The 13th Floor"

Reprint of the 5th story from
Adventures into Terror #12

A building manager is approached by a ghoul who wants to rent the 13th floor. He says there is no 13th floor but the ghoul threatens to kill him if he refuses the month rental and so he draws up a lease. Whenever one of the ghoul's associates enters the elevator and asks the bellman to stop at 13, a floor appears, but when only humans are on the elevator there is no such floor. This maddens the manager and so at the end of the month he demands the ghoul show him the space so that he can ascertain he and his associates have vacated the premises. The ghoul agrees but when they exit the elevator the manager is delighted to discover the space is actually there and wants to measure it so that he can rent it out. The ghoul warns him to return to the elevator as the floor does not exist for humans, but the manager refuses to pay heed. Once the elevator door shuts, the manager's body becomes suspended in-between the 12th and 14th floors.

A scientist theorizes that if one animal can save its life by killing its mate, it will do so. He tests this theory on gorillas by suspending bananas out of their reach and the male does in fact strangle his mate in order to use her body as a ladder to reach the fruit. When he discovers his wife is cheating on him, he stitches the two lover's shoulders together and dumps them in a cave filled with hungry hyenas and an exit wide enough for only one to fit through and leaves them ...an ax.
