Synopsis for 1st story

In Peter's hospital room, Felicia sits by the comatose Parker's bed, contemplating how his being in a coma was expected as he always risked his life for perfect strangers; now in a hospital bed he can't afford and seemingly is unlikely to leave. Ben arrives in the window asking Peter's progress, but Felicia spitefully retorts that he'll be dead later and Ben can keep being Spider-Man. Calling her words unfair, Felicia brings up how Peter cared about fairness and calls Ben a thief for wearing the mask, and they soon escalate into bitter arguing.

However, the astral projection of Doctor Strange appears, explaining that seeing the projection means the Sorcerer's death had occurred, and that Spider-Man is needed at the Sanctum Sanctorum for an urgent request. Not trusting Ben, Felicia accompanies him to the Sanctum and both bicker until they arrive. Upon Wong's greeting, he informs them Strange was indeed murdered, despite Felicia pointing out Strange's younger self visibly investigating the crime scene. However, Wong sees that Ben Reilly answered the summons, and asks that if the real Spider-Man were indisposed, that Ben should handle it instead.

With numerous unknown magical threats bound by various magics, Strange's death will likely loosen those very magics and tasks the duo with finding and resolving them before chaos hits New York. Provided a list of threats and correlating dossiers, Felicia agrees to accompany Ben more so to see him fail, not believing him worthy to be Spider-Man.

Their first task is ensuring that the Gator Shaman abides by magical treaties in Strange's absence, only to find him going against them almost immediately as soon as news reached him; they agree on hating magic in general. Once Felicia restrains him, Ben informs Gator Shaman that Strange kept him at bay to protect the albino alligators in the sewers, who would go extinct by poachers like the Kravinoff family; so Gator Shaman returns his alligators to the underground byways.

Next was to stop the Hungry Prince of Hearts who eats children hearts, only to find Moon Knight already handled it by slaying the Hungry Prince. Asking if Strange was dead, he is saddened having owed the good doctor an apology, and they resume their list.

The subsequent tasks involved ensuring Mammon was encased in the Wall Street Bronze Bull, quelling Jiangshi attacks in Chinatown, and exorcising the 666 Train, feeding the Central Park Dragon with hot dogs, stop some mummies, and appeasing dead spirits under James J. Walker Park.

With much of the list done, Felicia and Ben think back on their times with Doctor Strange, and they both realize that they're in a world without Doctor Strange now. As he was keeping all the magical world in line, Ben compares him to the Village Doctor parable, how nobody thinks of him when they're healthy. When the doctor gets sick from the village neglecting him, they too got sick again and then everyone realized how much the doctor did for them. When Felicia asks who told him, Ben reveals it's one of Peter's memories from when Aunt May told him, then they resume their assignment.

Dealing with literal goblins stealing food and a car, Felicia reminds the disgusted Ben that he has to get used to goblins if he wants to stay Spider-Man. As Felicia removes the goblins from the car, Ben manually holds the car until the last goblin is removed to save a bystander. With one item left, Ben remembers to ask Felicia who she left with Peter, with her saying she left her best guys to watch him; Bruno watching TV while Boris reads a magazine as they sit beside Peter.

Their final task is rather mundane: they need to bring a pretzel to Jimena Garcia after her shift as a custodian and ensure her safe ride on her bus home. Ben and Felicia approach her in civilian attire, Jimena talks about how Stephen would always arrive just as she got off shift and made her night better before she headed home. After Jimena leaves, Ben reminds her that a world without Doctor Strange is frightening, but the world cannot live without Spider-Man.

While Ben could resume being Scarlet Spider, Peter is comatose and Miles will someday be THE Spider-Man, but for now it has to be Ben. Reticent and angry, Felicia agrees with him for now with plans to get Peter out of his bed; she stops Ben's joke of her and Peter getting into bed, and says she'll see him around.

Solicit Synopsis

• This ain't Ben Reilly's first rodeo as Spider-Man, but he's never had to deal with the death of the Sorcerer Supreme and what it does to New York City.

• Part of Strange's will and testament was to ask Spidey to deal with particular problems… Is BEN up to it?

• Black Cat isn't a big Ben fan, so is she riding shotgun because she owes Strange to keep an eye on Ben, or to sabotage Ben?!
