Synopsis for "Ashes, Ashes... We All Fall Down"

Brought before the Tribunal by the Elf, Luann Bloom is revealed to be a mechanical being created by the Tribunal to spy on the Defenders. Tapping into her memory banks, the Tribunal watches a flashback to one of the Defenders’ earlier adventures, which takes place in-between issues #68 and #69. The Hulk battles a mysterious woman who defeats him and injects a tiny device in his brain that enables her to control him. Heading to the Richmond Riding Academy, she manages to do the same to Nighthawk, Valkyrie, and Hellcat. She then brings the Defenders to Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, where she injects Strange and Clea with the same device. However, Strange escapes her control by separating his astral self from his body. Strange listens as the woman reveals herself to be Yandroth, whose consciousness merged with that of a female scientist after his death. She gave Yandroth a body he could use to get revenge on the Defenders, while he gave her the scientific knowledge to create her mental implants, but she claims to have overpowered Yandroth’s consciousness. Strange summons the Sub-Mariner to his aid and manages to free Hulk and Valkyrie from her control. She uses the other Defenders still under control to fight them, but the strain of trying to control so many minds at once becomes too great. Strange suspected that the real Yandroth’s consciousness was still struggling to regain control of her, and as he breaks free, her own mind is destroyed. The Tribunal considers this information to be of no consequence to their own plan. “The Defenders must be destroyed,” they declare, “or time itself will die!”
