History
Origin[]
The Demon of Smoke was a demon of unspecified origin,[1] though it was seemingly tied to the Serpent-Folk that ruled the Pre-Cataclysmic Stygia, as their word-glyphs were part of the ritual to summon it.[2]
Hyborian Age[]
The Stygian witch Zeriti intended to slay Rufia by invoking the smoke demon upon her, using word-glyphs of the Serpent-Folk of Pre-Cataclysm Stygia along with pollen from the Purple Lotus originating from the Southern Swamps tossed into the flame. Zeriti was wounded during the invocation by the Kushite Imbalayo who was immediately opposed to the Cimmerian Conan. During their duel, the demon manifested itself as a "a shapeless mass of cloudly something" and killed Imbalayo.[2]Attributes
Powers
The smoke demon could enter a body and make it collapse as if it was drained of bones and blood, leaving an empty bag of skin containing a few organs.[2]
Notes
- The Demon of Smoke was created in the story "Hawks over Shem" (1955), a short story by L. Sprague de Camp featuring Conan the Barbarian, and based on the story "Hawks over Egypt" by Robert E. Howard. The story is usually credited to both authors.[3]
- The Demons' profile in Marvel Zombies: The Book of Angels, Demons & Various Monstrosities #1 (September, 2007) and Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #3 (July, 2008) lists that both the Demon of Smoke and Shub-Niggurath first appeared in Savage Sword of Conan #36 (December, 1978), where, in the story "Hawks Over Shem", an unnamed demon described as "a shapeless mass of cloudy something" was summon, but unnamed.
- The profile also mentions that Zeriti summoned a "smoke demon" of "unknown origin".[1]
- At Marvel World, a (French) website reprising the listing, Shub-Niggurath's first appearance or mention is moved to Savage Sword of Conan #64 (May, 1981).[4]
