Lady Diana Knight was a renowned British actress in 18th century. At some point she joined the Hellfire Club and became a mistress of Sir Patrick Clemens. In 1770s she, Clemens and several other members of the Club emigrated to the New York, one of the British colonies in the North America, and established an American branch of the Hellfire Club. Sir Clemens and Lady Knight served as its first Black King and Black Queen respectively.[1]

By 1780 under unknown circumstances the Black Queen position was taken by Lady Jean Grey, while Lady Diana Knight became the Red Queen instead. Joined by George Clinton, the Red King, the four formed the Club's first Inner Circle.[3] They meddled in the American Revolutionary War, and tried to assure the victory of the Kingdom of Great Britain. To achieve their goals, they came to Philadelphia, where they hoped to control Major General Wallace Worthington and get Thirteen Colonies' military secrets from him, but their plan failed.[4]

  • The Hellfire Club was inspired by the 1966 episode of The Avengers "A Touch of Brimstone", which starred Diana Rigg as Mrs Peel (née Emma Knight).
