While Doctor Strange and Clea are out for a stroll, they are targeted by the Sons of Satannish who summon their master to mystically attack the two. Doctor Strange manages to ward off the attack with his astral form with none the wiser. Dropping Clea off at her new apartment, Doctor Strange returns to his Sanctum to study on Satannish and try to determine what the entity plots to do. Meanwhile, Sons of Satannish leader Asmodeus, disguises himself as Wong in order to manipulate her for the group's own ends.

While searching for Clea, Doctor Strange comes into combat with members of the Sons of Satannish, however his initial battle against them turns up no leads. Meanwhile, Asmodeus manipulates Clea into doing their bidding, ordering her to return to Doctor Strange's Sanctum, murder Doctor Strange and steal the Book of Vishanti from him. When Clea returns, Doctor Strange casts a spell to learn what the Sons are up to, and allows Clea to take the book so that he can follow her to the Sons' base. There, Doctor Strange battles Asmodeus, however Asmodeus is able to overpower Strange with his Crystal of Conquest, and relinquish not only the Book of Vishanti, but Strange's Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto before ordering them to death.

The Ancient One informs Doctor Strange that the Dread Dormammu has threatened to cross over from his Dark Dimension into that of Earth's. The Ancient One dispatches Strange to the Dark Dimension, to send a message to Dormammu personally. Arriving in the Dark Dimension, Doctor Strange battle many warriors and creatures sent by Dormammu to bar his passage. A beautiful white-haired girl shows Strange the way to Dormammu's lair, and Strange warns Dormammu that before attacking Earth's dimension or threatening the Ancient One, he must first battle Doctor Strange.
