Synopsis for "Charlatan!"
Morgana Blessing is attending a seminar for the magician Kerwin Havelock for an article in New York Magazine. She suspects he’s a phony but he puts on an interesting show and he has the interest of a wealthy benefactor named Henry Farrington who allows him the use of his estate for his next seminar. It’s revealed afterwards that Havelock has a special device in his robes that creates the special effects for his performance and the enlightened audience member is merely a hired plant.
Doctor Strange is meanwhile sending his astral projection to another dimension to address a burgeoning problem where a warlord king and his chief wizard are contemplating an invasion of the dimension harboring Earth. Strange’s display of power, however, convinces them to hold back. He returns to his own dimension where he’s meeting with Morgana Blessing for lunch and she tells him of her encounter with Havelock but he becomes alarmed when she mentions one of his seemingly phony incantations could actually have real consequences so he seeks to gain an audience with him before any real damage can be done.
Doctor Strange meets Havelock at his hotel where he initially is brushed off for his concern. Strange, however, neutralizes his bodyguard and hypnotizes Havelock, who tells him of his encounter with an Indonesian mystic, where he picked up some of her incantations thinking them harmless words. He demands Havelock cease using them but is attacked by one of his accomplices. He attempts to fight back but appears to have suffered a concussion and is unable to so he jumps out of the window and flies back to the Sanctum Sanctorum where he’s treated by Sara Wolfe.
Morgana Blessing attends the seminar at the Farrington estate with Doctor Strange disguised as her father Emil Blessing. Before long, Kerwin Havelock arrives and begins making the incantations which he assumes are harmless. However, an interdimensional portal opens and demons from the Planes of Pohldahk surge forth and begin wreaking havoc. Doctor Strange struggles to banish the, back to their dimension but finally succeeds. Afterwards, he asks the attendees if they wish to remember the events and they ask to forget. Doctor Strange casts a spell for them to lose their memory of the occurrence but refuses to allow Havelock to forget as punishment for his nonchalance towards magic.
