History
The Dora Milaje were bodyguards tasked with protecting whoever held the mantle of the Black Panther, usually the king or crown prince of Wakanda. They were typically companions to the Black Panthers on their adventures, such as when T'Chaka apprehended his brother N'Jobu in California, or when T'Challa rescued Nakia from militants in Nigeria.[1] At least one, Ayo, accompanied T'Challa when he traveled to Germany to witness the interrogation of the apparent culprit behind T'Chaka's assassination, the Winter Soldier. Ayo later got between T'Challa and Natasha Romanoff when she tried to approach the new king with an offer until T'Challa told her to stand down.[2]
The Dora Milaje did not abandon their duty when Erik "Killmonger" Stevens became Wakanda's king by seemingly killing T'Challa in ritual combat despite General Okoye's misgivings about Killmonger's plans for Wakanda. However, T'Challa miraculously survived his battle with Killmonger, and returned to resume their duel before Killmonger could disperse Vibranium weapons throughout the outside world. This was all the excuse Okoye needed to turn the Dora Milaje against Killmonger, as he was not rightfully their king until he defeated T'Challa. The Dora Milaje and T'Challa fought Killmonger and the loyal Border Tribe. While T'Challa and Killmonger's fight led them deep into Wakanda's Vibranium mine, the Dora Milaje were soon overwhelmed by the Border Tribe's warriors. They were only saved by the sudden intervention of the Jabari Tribe. The battle ended when the Border Tribe's leader W'Kabi, who was in a romantic relationship with Okoye, surrendered to Okoye after he nearly ran her down with his war rhinoceros.
The Dora Milaje are currently sworn to T'Challa now that he has resumed his place as the Black Panther and Wakanda's king.[1]
The Dora Milaje defended Wakanda alongside the Avengers during Thanos' invasion of Wakanda in order to acquire the Mind Stone from the Vision. After Thanos acquired all six Infinity Stones and eliminated half of all life in the universe,[3] the Dora Milaje remained under the leadership of General Okoye, who joined the remaining Avengers in keeping peace around the world.
Five years after Thanos wiped out half the universe's population, the Avengers underwent a Time Heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones and undo Thanos' actions. Following their success, the Dora Milaje came to the heroes' aid when a past-version of Thanos arrived in their timeline and threatened to wipe out the whole universe. The combined heroic forces were able to ultimately defeat Thanos.[4]
Eight months after the battle, the Dora Milaje tracked down the Winter Soldier, now their ally known as the White Wolf, for he had broken Helmut Zemo, the man responsible for the death of King T'Chaka, out of prison.[5]Paraphernalia
