History

Dorothy "Dot" Walker was the mother of Patricia Walker, later the costumed heroine known as Hellcat. Dorothy was a harsh parent, demanding perfection from her daughter. When Patsy didn't deliver on her mother's impossible expectations, Dorothy turned to fiction, fantasizing about an ideal version of Patsy's teenage years that she published in a self-written and drawn comic book series. In these fictional stories Dorothy portrayed herself as "Mary Walker."[1] With help from her model/publishing friend Millie Collins and her sister Sophia McConnell, Dorothy developed a very popular media empire on the fictional Patsy Walker. However, Dorothy's actual daughter actually hated the notoriety the series brought her.[2]

Because of her domineering and demeaning attitude, Dorothy's husband Joshua left her. He tried to get custody of their children, but Dorothy had become wealthy from her writing while Josh couldn't maintain steady work or housing. Josh moved to Greentown, Ohio and Dorothy moved with their children and Dolly Donahue to New Jersey.[6][7] Dorothy began to tell everyone, including her children, that Josh had died rather than admit the truth about their divorce.[1][6] Patsy eventually escaped from her mother when she grew up, and cut all ties with her.[1]

At an old age, Dorothy developed cancer. On her deathbed, the demon Avarrish appeared to her and offered to give her health and youth if she promised him Patsy's body as a vessel. Dorothy agreed to the bargain,[8] but died before that happened.[1] The efforts of Avarrish's acolytes to turn Patsy into their master's vessel would later be thwarted by the Defenders and Patsy herself.[9] Because of this, Dorothy's soul was damned to the Hellish realm of Avarrish's superior, Mephisto. Claiming interests on the deal, Mephisto and his son Blackheart also enslaved the souls of Dorothy's entire bloodline.

Years after Dorothy's death, Blackheart lured Patsy to Hell, where she encountered Dorothy and her extended family. The demon tried to goad Patsy into his service, offering the freedom of her family's souls in exchange. Patsy managed to tap into the connection to Hell that Blackheart wanted to exploit from her and defeated him, freeing the souls of her relatives in the process, including Dorothy.[10]
