Synopsis for "The Pit of Death"
1808: As Dracula continues to stalk Transylvania, a man named Lupescu has called together the people of the town in order to encourage them into doing something against Dracula. The people however have grown to dismiss Dracula as simply a legend, and that Lupescu nothing more than a raving madman. He comes to blows with the local police chief when they discredit the fact that Dracula has been to his home and fed on his wife an various nights.
As this is happening, Dracula has once more returned to the hope of Lupescu to feed on his wife, Velanna. Lupescu meanwhile has broken off his attack on the police chief and fled back to his home where he finds that his wife has finally been killed by Dracula. As the police regroup and go after Lupescu to arrest him for his assault on the chief, Lupescu prepares a stake to drive into his wife's heart. The police arrive just as he drives the stake into his wife's chest. The police arrest the raving Lupescu who warns them not to remove the stake, however his warnings fall on deaf ears.
Over the next four days, Lupescu cannot sleep or eat, but feigns it on the fourth night. When the guard comes to bring his nightly meal, Lupsecu easily jumps him and knocks him out and flees the jail. Securing a cross, Lupescu goes to Castle Dracula to confront the vampire lord.
Entering the Castle, Lupescu is instantly confronted by Dracula, who orders one of his vampires to knock the cross from Lupescu's hand. Dracula then lifts the man and tosses him down into his pit of death. Landing in the basement, Lupescu finds himself before a row of coffins. The coffins soon open revealing Dracula's brides, female vampires loyal to their dark master. To Lupescu's horror, one of their number is his own wife.

Notes
- The Pit of Death takes place in Transylvania, on October 12, 1809. Although Transylvania is currently located in Romania, in "our" universe, in 1809, it was recognized as part of Hungary by the Habsburg Empire, which controlled Transylvania at the time. Assuming the history of the Marvel Universe mirrors ours in this part of the world, then Transylvania should be considered part of Hungary for the purposes of this story.
