Dunwich Sanatorium was an asylum in or nearby Dunwich,[3] California.[2]
History
Dr. Swinson
Dr. Marshall Swinson ran it, providing hit-men for the mob[9] and for governments, manufacturing assassins, apparently involved in major events in History.
"Dr. Algernon J. Rottwell" / "Dr. Rot" (Bentley Newton) was one patient that was too violently unpredictable to work as an assassin. Dunwich's "incurable ward" was built just for him, but his insanity infected the whole building anyway. He eventually sparked a riot, took control of the staff among which he killed some.[6]
Dr. Rot
The others, including Dr. Swinson, were sent to the incurable ward, where he maimed and humiliated them. Rot did not pursue the killer factory plot, and produced only grotesque monsters out of his "patients". He used machines made of brains to control them.[6]
"Dr. Rot" led raids on the 8th Street Rescue Mission in San Francisco to harvest people.[6]
One year later, Wolverine, on an investigations on serial killers that had went in that same homeless shelter, and was captured while undercover there. He escaped one week later,[6] but with painful wounds.[10]Residents

Notes
- The Dunwich Sanatorium is possibly a reference to Dunwich, a town in Massachusetts created by H.P. Lovecraft in The Dunwich Horror (1929), and to Arkham Asylum, a DC Universe location whose name comes from Arkham, another city created by Lovecraft and a central location in his stories.
- The town of Dunwich, California, was later introduced in Wolverine (Vol. 2) #305.
- The alias of Bentley Newton, "Dr. Algernon J. Rottwell" is possibly a reference to either or both of two authors whose works may have inspired elements of the Dunwich Horror short story:
- Algernon Blackwood, another famous horror author included by Lovecraft as one of the "Modern Masters" in the section of that name in "Supernatural Horror in Literature", and his works were alluded to or influenced Cthulhu Mythos authors including Lovecraft, Frank Belknap Long, Clark Ashton Smith and Ramsey Campbell.[11] It is stated that the track of Wilbur's brother in the Dunwich Horror recall those seen in Blackwood story "The Wendigo".[12]
- Algernon Charles Swinburne, which wrote "By the North Sea", a poem about the lost port of Dunwich, Suffolk, England. That poem was in an anthology owned by Lovecraft.[13]
Trivia
- Innsmouth Hills Sanitarium is another medical facility named after a place in Lovecraft's works, in the manner of Arkham Asylum. Dorkham Asylum is a parody version.
