History
The X-Men failed to stop the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly at the hands of "Gambit". This led to the mass production of Sentinels who eventually seized control of the United States of America, in order to better protect humanity from mutants. Mutants were thrown into concentration camps, and the X-Men were all killed, with the exception of Wolverine, who survived and fought the Sentinel regime forming a Resistance. Some mutants, like Lucas Bishop, turned to hunting their own kind in return for amnesty from the Sentinels.
After capturing Wolverine, Rachel Summers, and Franklin Richards, Bishop attempted to turn them in. The Sentinels betrayed him however, and attempted to capture him as well, leading him to ally with Wolverine. In the ensuing escape Rachel and Franklin are killed and Wolverine took Bishop to Forge, who had a plan to change the future by sending someone back in time and stopping the assassination of Robert Kelly. Wolverine was originally supposed to go, but Bishop claimed that he was too old and that he should be the one to do it. Forge agreed, and Wolverine stayed behind, while Bishop traveled to the past.[1]Notes
