Shattered Earth was a shared universe developed by Malibu Comics, through its Eternity imprint.

History

In this Earth, normal civilization ended with a global war in May 3rd of 1995. Nobody knew why the war was fought. All classes of bombs were detonated: Atomic bombs, N bombs, and a strange bunch of Eugenic bombs (E-bombs)-weapons designed to twist the genetic structure of the population, resulting in immediate or delayed mutations.[1]

There were rumors of even stranger artifacts, dimensional bombs that would tear a hole in the fabric of reality. Many of the people died of hunger or radiation poisoning. Farmland would not produce. And a great amount of new petty muttant warlords fought for the remaing ruins of lost civilization.[citation needed]

35 years later, in this dire word Dr. Cugat decided to create the Ex-mutants, from a group of five mutant teens that he had protected and raised. The experiment was an success, and the 5 new humans were surprised by the changes, to a perfect specimens of the old forgotten human race. And Dr Cugat sent them in a mission to recreate human civilization and redeem the world. But first they had to deal with the local warlord: Great Fred.[2]

Notes

  • Prior to being given an official reality number, this universe was referred as Earth-TRN1086 as a part of our Temporary Reality Numbers classification system.
  • Shattered Earth began as a expansion of Ex-Mutants. This title started out as an independent comic published by Eternity Comics (then acquired by Malibu), but after various legal disputes, ended in a special kind of shared ownership between the creators and Malibu themselves, who could expand and develop the characters.[3][4] Various volumes were created, like The New Humans, Wild Knights and Solo Ex-Mutants during the period 1988-1990. As the sales weren't improving, the line was cancelled.
  • This universe was rebooted in 1991 with Ex-Mutants (Vol. 2), where the characters were different, but the general setting and background was left the same as in Shattered Earth, acting as an alternate universe to the original one.
  • When Marvel bought Malibu, that included Malibu's portion of the rights to Shattered Earth.
