History
This reality's history diverged from that of Earth-616 when the original five X-Men returned from the future to their native time. Here, Jean Grey decided not to block the memories of that time, believing that they could instead use that future knowledge to their advantage, since they would know who the villains were in advance. For a time, she blocked Professor X from learning of this via an unexpected use of her own unblocked telepathic power. This quickly started to fall apart, however, as she took the knowledge of Magneto's attack on Manhattan from Xavier's mind, arguing that she could be trusted to use this power to safeguard the future.
When the X-Men confronted Magneto, Jean ended up having a brief conversation with him, after which she decided that his fanaticism was too dangerous and wiped his mind. Xavier cut ties with the team after this, leading them to move into a new skyscraper base that Angel was able to obtain for them using his inheritance.
In turn, Beast made a new version of Cerebro for Jean's use, which she used to find a young boy whose emerging mutant power was too much for him to handle. Despite the team rushing there as quickly as possible, the boy still died in an explosion just as they arrived. All Jean could do was be with him and ease his pain as he died. She then manipulated the fire chief, reporters, and any other onlookers into believing that the explosion was the result of a gas leak, fearing the response of figures like Doctor Trask if they knew the truth. Her team was uneasy with this, but reluctantly went along with the plan.
This quickly backfired, and Trask quickly unleashed his Sentinels on the X-Men, an attack that they barely had time to escape. Realizing that this spelt disaster for all other mutants, they rushed to collect those they knew about, including Kitty Pryde, Danielle Moonstar, and Sam Guthrie, and bring them to the relative safety of the X-Mansion.
Upon dropping off the first batch of mutant kids, Jean was surprised and displeased to find that Xavier had been working on restoring Magneto's mind, with Xavier commenting that her personality had become much like Erik's. Realizing that this was true, Iceman and Angel chose to stay at the school once more, with Cyclops following soon after when Jean fried the brains of Beast and Trish Tilby after the latter dug a bit too deep and Hank tried to reveal the truth to her.
Realizing that she had become a monster, but unwilling to stop, Jean willingly invited the Phoenix to increase her power in an attempt to stop the agitators before they could gain large followings. This led to Project Chimera being approved, before the Phoenix burned those military leaders and scientists alive.
This was broadcast on the news, and the X-Men recognised the Phoenix and relayed what they knew to Professor X and Magneto, who was now a teacher at the school. Worried that the President of the United States may soon publicly declare mutants to be a threat to public safety due to Jean's actions, they track her down to confront her, wearing upgraded psi-defence helmets. They attempted to talk Phoenix down, but she was unable to accept that she was in the wrong. In a moment of frustration and panic, she seemingly destroyed her world, leaving nothing but herself, fully merged with the Phoenix.[1]Residents
