History

In 2003, after an accident, Cassandra Webb was given powers to see the future, having numerous visions of events that happened, one of them being the death of three teenagers, Julia Cornwall, Mattie Frankie and Anya Corazón, at the hands of a man named Ezekiel Sims. Saving the girls, Cassandra would flee with them to the Amazon Jungle, and after leaving them with her friend Ben Parker, she would discover their origins, control their powers, and defeat Ezekiel, going blind, paraplegic and becoming Madame Web. While Peter Parker was born at the same year, and became the super hero Spider-Man years later following the bite of a radioactive spider.[4][5]

In 2018, the symbiote species native to the planet Klyntar was preparing to invade Earth through an army led by Riot. The latter, along with the Symbiote named Venom and two other members formed an infiltration unit, voluntarily allowed themselves to be taken aboard a deep space probe belonging to the Life Foundation medical corporation, founded by entrepreneur Carlton Drake. During the landing, Riot joined the pilot, causing the shuttle to crash in Malaysia, and subsequently bonded to different individuals to reach the Life Foundation headquarters in San Francisco. At the same time, Drake would begin experimenting on the other Symbiotes recovered from the crash site using unwilling human subjects, but the Venom symbiote would escape captivity until finally reaching and bonding with the ill-fated reporter Eddie Brock. The two united to stop Drake and Riot in order to thwart the invasion and expose the Life Foundation's illegal experiments, culminating in their rise as San Francisco's "Lethal Protector".[6]

In 2019, Spider-Man disappeared which lead to the crime increasing in all New York. Sometime later after having found a cure for his illness, Michael Morbius experimented with Costa Rican vampire bats, gaining vampire powers in the process. Milo would replicate the experiment and also gain powers, killing countless people. Morbius would realize this and confront Milo and ultimately kill him.[7]

A year and a half[8] after Eddie and Venom's meeting, the duo ceased operating as San Francisco's violent vigilante due to difficulties created by disagreements between the two. Upon interviewing notorious serial killer Cletus Kasady, Eddie would be bitten by him, causing Cletus to obtain a separate fragment of Venom, called Carnage, which now resided within his bloodstream. On the day of Cletus' execution, Carnage would engulf him and allow him to cause a bloody escape from San Quentin State Prison. They would seek out Cletus' childhood sweetheart Frances Barrison, also known as Shriek, at the Ravencroft Institute and let her join them. Eddie and Venom would put aside their disagreements and rejoin as one to combat the threat posed by Cletus and the Carnage symbiote, successfully taking them down with Shriek. This forced the duo into hiding where they went to an island for vacation, however due to outside means, they would be transported to another universe where the two learned of a hero called Spider-Man.[9] The two would then leave to a bar where they would ask the bartender about all this universe's superheroes only to be sent back to their universe before they could meet up with this universe' Spider-Man, unknowingly leaving a piece of Venom behind.[10] For the same reason, Adrian Toomes are transported to this universe. He later meets Morbius, wanting to form a team against the cause of this interdimensional mess he thinks is Spider-Man, to which Morbius applies to.[7]

The Spot from an alternate reality would briefly visit this universe and steal a pack of gum from Mrs. Chen.[1]

Notes

Trivia

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse referred to this reality as "Earth-688," presumably based on the unofficial Temporary Reality Numbering used by the Marvel Database for a proper designation. Since that number has already been taken by an existing Earth-688 reality with incompatible history, Sony's Spider-Man Universe is presently being referred here as "Earth-688B," mirroring Earth-616B's nomenclature used in the film to differentiate it from the Earth-616 from the comics.
    • This is the second case in which the Temporary Reality Numbering system on the Marvel Database has been adapted into the official designation of the universe and made canonical, the previous case being Earth-517.
  • Before the name "Sony's Spider-Man Universe" was announced, other names had been used including "Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters."[3]
