History
The man that would become Ed Vernon lost his wife shortly after giving birth to their daughter Maria Hill, for which he always resented her.[2] Roughly when Maria was entering adulthood,[note 1] she had a falling-out with her father, and they stopped talking ever since. As Maria became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., her father went on to change his identity numerous times. With his third name-change, he became Ed Vernon.
Seven years after the last time he spoke to Maria, Ed saw her in the middle of a rainy day sneaking into the backyard of their house to bury something. Ed later dug it up and kept in his safe, what turned out to be a confidential S.H.I.E.L.D. file.[1]
Eight years afterwards, P.I. Jessica Jones paid Vernon a visit while looking into numerous attempts on Maria's life following her discharge from S.H.I.E.L.D..[3] Following a minor skirmish, Jessica saw herself forced to abduct Vernon to his own apartment and tie him up in order to interrogate him. He eventually gave her the confidential files.[1]
