History
Edward Catherwood was a butler who was employed by Sir Clive Bentley. During his service, Catherwood assisted Sir Clive in quite a few experiments in the occult.[1]
At some point after Sir Clive's death, Catherwood entered the employ of Sir Clive's daughter, Victoria Bentley, and assisted her in her own dealings with the occult. The two of them lived in Bentley Manor in the south of England until the manor house was destroyed in a fire.[1]
After the manor's destruction, Catherwood remained in Miss Victoria's service and accompanied her when she took up residence in the Hotel Resplendent, an old resort on the southwest coast of England.[2]
Later, after Dane Whitman's body was turned to metal, Catherwood accompanied Miss Victoria when she moved to the United States to live in Garrett Castle in Virginia.[3] After Whitman was restored to a flesh-and-blood existence, Catherwood and Victoria continued to reside in Garrett Castle with Whitman and his new squire, Sean Dolan.[4]Notes
- Although Catherwood has only ever been addressed by his last name, the Omniscient Narrative in Black Knight (Vol. 2) #1 revealed that his first name was Edward.
- Catherwood's hair has usually been white but he was depicted with grey hair in Strange Tales (Vol. 2) #18 and brown hair in Avengers Annual #22. It has not been established if he just dyes his hair or if something else is responsible.
- Although Victoria Bentley identified herself as the daughter of Lord Bentley when she first appeared in Strange Tales #114, Catherwood, while speaking with her during his own first appearance in Strange Tales (Vol. 2) #12, referred to her as Sir Clive's niece. Oddly, Victoria didn't correct him.
