History

When rookie beat cop Edward Dyson confronted the Punisher for having killed a gang of murderers, the Punisher convinced him to take credit for the killing, which advanced Dyson's police career until he was assigned to the major crimes unit. However, the major crimes squad he was part of took bribes from the mob to ignore them when they threatened contractors. When he contacted the Punisher for advice, the Punisher agreed to stop the mob, but he also suggested Dyson stop his own squad. Dyson then turned his squad into internal affairs for criminal investigation, agreeing to wear a wire to record evidence of criminal activity. His squad was arrested, which earned Dyson a promotion to the police's homicide department, but also made him unpopular with his fellow officers.[1]

Two months after his squad was arrested, Dyson and his family were attacked in an explosion caused by criminals associated with the construction racket Dyson tried to stop. While Dyson's wife and two daughters were killed, Dyson survived. When the Punisher contacted Dyson to inform him he had killed the people who murdered his family, Dyson verbally lashed out at the Punisher, blaming him for influencing him in such a way eventually his family were killed, and vowed vengeance against the vigilante. Six months after his family was killed, Dyson formed the Payback identity to begin his revenge against the Punisher.[1]
