History
The Ego-Spawn is an aspect of Franklin Richards, mutant son of the Fantastic Four's Mister Fantastic and Invisible Girl. The Ego-Spawn represents a negative aspect of Franklin's personality. It first manifested physically when Mister Fantastic sought out his colleague Abe Jankovitz to conduct a test to determine the extent of Franklin's mutant powers. This experiment caused Franklin's powers to manifest as an orb of energy. This energy was drawn to Franklin's uncle the Human Torch who was in a conflict with Franco Berardi a student of Seaboard University in Massachusetts who was picking a fight with the Torch due to his jealousy over the Torch's fame and popularity. Deciding to try and pick a fight with the Torch to prove he could beat the hero in a fist fight, Franco challenged Johnny to a one-on-one fight. The Torch tried to diffuse the situation, but Berardi kept on pressing his luck by kicking the portion of the Fantasti-Car that Johnny was piloting. The Ego-Spawn entity then took possession of Berardi's body, endowing him with energy projection powers, enhanced strength and durability.
While Reed and the Thing went to help Johnny combat the Ego-Spawn, Sue and Abe tried to shut down the experiment, but Franklin's powers were keeping them at bay. While the Ego-Spawn proved nearly impossible to contain due to his sheer power, Sue managed to stop its threat by turning invisible long enough to shut off the device that Franklin was hooked into. The Ego-Spawn energies returned to Franklin's mind and became dormant again, while Franco was restored to normal with no memory of what had happened.[1]
Years later when young Franklin was replaced by his teenage counterpart -- dubbed Psi-Lord -- from Earth-6311, the Ego-Spawn returned to taunt teen Franklin as he and his teammates in Fantastic Force battled the Inhuman Genetics Council over dominion of the kingdoms of Atlantis and Attilan. Ultimately, Psi-Lord used his powers to free the souls lost within the mystical Ebony Blade, re-absorbing the Ego-Spawn in the process.[2]
Ego-Spawn later resurfaced when aspects of Franklin's personality began to manifest physically, and his fellow teammates in Fantastic Force began trying to find a means of returning him to normal.[3] This later led to battles against Kargul[4] and Vangaard.[5] ultimately ending with Psi-Lord merging his various aspects back into himself once again.[6]Attributes
