Eidoran was one of the places, along with Stygia and Acheron (though the relations, if any, between Eidoran and the others are unknown, see notes), where Set was worshiped circa 15,500 BC., until the city's demon guardians were defeated by a sorcerer in the employ in of the first worshipers of Mitra. During the Hyborian Age of Conan (circa 10,000 BC), The ruins of Eidoran were within the borders of Argos.

History

Age of Acheron[]

15,500 BC[]

The city of Eidoran was one of the places where Set was worshiped circa 15,500 BC.[1] The city was mighty but decadent, and worshipers of Set summoned demons from Hell, seemingly including Set's servant Khorus.[2]

13,000 BC[]

That event can presumably be set circa 13,000 BC at earliest, as Mitra was sent on Earth over 15,000 years ago to act as his representative by his creator Ahura Mazda.[3] (known at that time as by the Hybori as "Hura-Maztha").[4] That date also coincides with the Fall of Acheron.
Khorus and the demons were eventually bound by a sorcerer hired by the first followers of Mitra, sealed in stone by the power of ancient spells, using the Skull of Set (a crystal skull with a ruby on its forehead) as a focus of power. The Skull was the key to free Khorus as well.[2]

Hyborian Age[]

Eventually, the city laid in ruins, literally cut off from the rest of the world as the city stood on a plateau surrounded by a trench, and located within the borders of Argos.

The Followers of Mitra guarded the haunted ruins of Eidoran.[2]

Age of Conan (10,000 BC)[]

As Koth attacked Argos, soldiers heading for the eastern front slaughtered the guards on the way, save for one who staggered into an Eastern Argos temple of Mitra. Tamara, one of the Brides of Mitra, was sent with the next departing coach, in hope of reaching the ruins before the followers of Set.

The wagon of Conan (who was delivering crown jewels -including the Key of Set-, and was joined by aristocrats Lord Arides and Lady Vasallia, merchant Borondo, and Tamara -posing as a simple priestess of Mitra-, fleeing the Kothian advance in Eastern Argos, though Borondo was in fact a spy for the Kothians), ended up in the ruins of Eidoran while fleeing from hillmen bandits. The next morning, a party of Argosseans attacked, as one member was accused of being a traitor, and they were to kill all members of the caravan. Though Conan was guaranteed safety and escort to perform his mission, he suspected he would be executed as well, and refused to surrender his fellow travelers. Instants later, a priest of Set entered the city as well, called by Khorus, who had sensed the "key" being near. He was killed by Tamara, but forced his blood to carry his life's will into Lady Vasallia, who then took the skull, while his sorcery his sorcery "removed" the bottom of the chasm surrounding Eidoran, trapping anyone there.

The demons were soon returned to flesh and battled Conan and Tamara, while Khorus himself was restored, causing ruins to collapse. Using a column fallen across the chasm, Arides came across and tried to plead his case to the Argosseans, but was executed. Some of the soldiers tried to pass across the chasm but fell into the pit due the demon struggling, causing the plateau to quake. "Vasallia" was beheaded by Tamara, and heroes and demon fought for the skull. Conan used it, smeared with his own blood, to blast Khorus into pieces and into the pit. Borondo was then exposed as the spy by Conan, and forced to flee. Filling his purses with some of the jewels, Conan departed after greeting Tamara, now the sole guard of Eidoran.[2]

Religion[]

The decadent people of Eidoran worshiped Set and summoned demons from Hell, including Great Khorus, servant of Set.[2]

Notes

Acheron from Giant-Size Conan Vol 1 1 0001

Acheron, circa 13,000 BC

  • The relations, if any, between Eidoran and its two fellow Set-worshiping nations, were unrevealed (as well as the racial and cultural ascendancy of Eidoran).
    • As Eidoran was seemingly set in Argos (possibly in Eastern Argos), while Acheron occupied roughly the territory occupied during the Age of Conan by Argos (see map), and considering that Eidoran stood at least from 15,500 BC (date of the attested worship of Set) until 13,000 BC (date of the estimated fall, see "Eidoran circa 13,000 BC"), Eidoran was either a part of Acheron, enclaved by it, or a close neighbor to it by its eastern border, and presumably fell under the same alliance against Acheron and southward drift of the Hyborians that ended Acheron.[4]
